With our first, I was told that once he could roll himself from back to front, it was ok--at that point they should have the physical skill to move their heads out of a position that would cause excessive carbon dioxide rebreathing. I would still reposition him on occasion, but it at least kept me from feeling like I needed to watch him constantly.
My new guy, like my firstborn, is definitely more comfortable a little on his side than flat on his back. The cloth diaper seems to facilitate this without too much concern for him flipping over prematurely.

SIDS rates greatly decrease with age- and there are probably a lot of reasons, but increased strength, mobility, and just knowing when they need to change positions probably helps.
