Tummy Sleeping - Page 2

With our first, I was told that once he could roll himself from back to front, it was ok--at that point they should have the physical skill to move their heads out of a position that would cause excessive carbon dioxide rebreathing. I would still reposition him on occasion, but it at least kept me from feeling like I needed to watch him constantly.

My new guy, like my firstborn, is definitely more comfortable a little on his side than flat on his back. The cloth diaper seems to facilitate this without too much concern for him flipping over prematurely.

My DS sleeps next to me on his side. Since he is always touching me I've been feeling safe with side sleeping since my body is helping regulate his breathing. I am a super light sleeper and constantly check on him to make sure his breathing is not obstructed in any way. He also has really strong neck control already, and moves his head well...
When he is alone in the bed I lay him on his back but he usually turns to his side. Is that ok? He is not on his tummy and never really unattended for long.

Once they can roll over they really get to control how they sleep. Most parents tell me they spend the first few nights or weeks waking up and flipping baby over until they realize it is a losing battle SIDS rates greatly decrease with age- and there are probably a lot of reasons, but increased strength, mobility, and just knowing when they need to change positions probably helps.
