| MissNo: what is an "alergy/sensitivity panel"? |
Eva's ped at the time sent us for a blood draw, and the lab ran an ELISA/EIA (Enzyme Immunoassays) panel against about 100 foods. It is thought that the levels of some immune globulins; (IgE, IgA and IgG) in the blood show a person's sensitivity to foods.
We relocated in the middle of the testing, and an allergist checked the ELISA results, performed a skin test, and DD didn't show any sensitivity/allergy to the same foods that demonstrated very elevated levels on the ELISA panel. The allergist pointed out that the ingestion of foods can alter the IgG levels in the blood, so if she had peanut butter crackers, the levels would come up elevated, but she would not necessarily have a sensitivity to the foods. The results on the ELISA alone are quite misleading, because there isn't often a personal baseline to measure it against.
The problems didn't improve after an elimination diet, and they didn't regress after a return to her usual diet, so we aren't sure what to do next. But we'll keep trying, staggering down that road to rest.
