Rennet/enzymes

I have a question regarding enzymes used in cheese. I am vegan and have been for 21 years, so this is not for me.

My dh is omni and eats a lot of junk. Dds were vegan for the first few years of life and have been l/o veggie since then. They, honestly, eat more vegan than not b/c we have never bought dairy milk since dh is fine with soy milk, etc. They also don't eat eggs except baked into something someone other than me has baked.

So, a few years back, they both decided that they wouldn't eat cheese at parties (cheese pizza and so on) anymore b/c of the rennet in cheese. Dd#1 noticed the word on the ingredients label for a package of cheese somewhere and asked me what it was. I told her and that was the end of the their eating limited amounts of cheese except for when we buy them rennet-less cheese at the HFS.

So, the cheese dept clerk at Whole Foods the other day told me that no cheeses have rennet in them unless it specifically states that they do. He said that "enzymes" and "cheese cultures" are all non-animal derived unless is specifies otherwise. I had thought the opposite -- that they were animal derived unless it says "no animal rennet" or "no animal enzymes" or something to that effect.

Does anyone know?

Yeah, you're correct. The standard is animal-derived, plant-derived is an aberration and says so on the package.

That's what I thought. The employee told me that rennett was a potential allergen so it had to be listed as "rennett" not just "enzymes."
