He actually has one neighborhood dog who comes into our yard for a quick playdate every time he's out for a walk. The owner recently told me Sam is the only big dog his dog (who's maybe 25 pounds) will play with because he's so gentle. Sam will let anyone - (and anything! we have lots of wildlife here) into our yard. Guard dog he is not.

I'm sorry that many of you seem to think "friendly" is a code for "mean, aggressive, biting" dog.

I think you are misreading what we are saying....what you are calling friendly we are saying is rude....not mean or aggressive. I was referring to if a "friendly" dog runs up on a dog who is not, there very well could be a fight, and its not always the unfriendly dog at fault. The friendly dog if loose and ignoring the signs put out by the other dog to back off is actually the one causing it.

I think this is a misunderstanding - I believe SquishyKitty's "also" referred to the previous post of betsyj. It's just that while one dog is happy and excited, all that enthusiasm can be easily perceived as rudeness by other dogs (especially herding breeds/mixes who tend to have very different ideas of "proper behaviour").

Also, I got the impression that some of the comments were not directed specifically to you but rather to another poster who described not being able to restrain her dog when she encounters others on walks. Things get sidetracked like that sometimes.

And all of his favorite toys immediately are taken outside. I have to round them up every few days so he has stuff to play with inside.
I was referring to another poster, not yours.
