food dehydrator selection help

Okay, so, after making the best nuts in the oven this weekend (not sure why it worked better this time, but it did!), DH and i decided we need to get a dehydrator. It will be costly to run the oven all the time, and there are so many things we buy that we could make (leathers, jerky, etc). So, can someone give me some recs on dehydrators. We would not need the big 9 trays, perhaps in the future, but I dont want to spend a ton and then realize that we dont use it much.

Anyway, I have seen the excalibur rec. all the time. They have some with 5 trays up to 9. I did some more research and the Nesco American Harvest square dehydrator gor great reviews. But, I don tknow what the trays are made of. I htink plastic. The only ones I could find that had stainless steel trays were more than $300. Anyone have any thoughts? I cannot put our food on plastic. Not making a judgement for anyone else, but I have taken great pains to eliminate all plastic from our home that could possibly be removed and I cannot justify heating plastic to 160 degrees. Any thoughts woud be greatly appreciated!

I think your best bet is to buy a cube shaped dehydrator (like an Excalibur or Sausage Maker brand) and then buy stainless steel cookie sheets that will fit inside over the plastic trays. It's not the most elegant solution but I have a good friend who did that and it works quite well for her.

Thanks. Great suggestion.

So, I would place the stainless steel cookies sheet on top of the tray or in place of the tray. Thanks!

Most likely on top of the plastic tray. I suppose there's a small chance you could find cookie sheets that are the right height for placing in the slots in place of the plastic trays but I wouldn't plan on it.
