best source for inexpensive thread

I go through A LOT of white thread. I used to be able to get 1000 yard spools at walmart for a dollar. it was decent quality and lasted forever. the best I can find now is a 500 yard spool for $4. outrageous! Does anyone have a better source?

I've had good luck with the Joanns brand of serger thread. A large cone is usually $2, but I stock up when they go half off.
