Sore nipples?

My son is 13months, and my nipples have been really sore lately. Particularly when I pump (he's still nursing quite a bit, his dad and I aren't together so I pump when he's with his dad to maintain my supply). I know I ovulated last week for the first time since he was born (but theres no chance I'm pg - I haven't had sex in ages so thats not it)

How do you keep your nipples from staying sore? They hurt when ds latches on initially, then the pain goes away, but if I'm pumping it hurts the whole time. What is going on?

If its from ovulation, it will get better on its own. I find some months hurt more than others but it doesnt last more than 3-4 days. I havent found anything that makes it better. Its from the hormone surge after ovulation.
