What's going on with my little girl?

Here's the story. About weeks ago my entire family got sick with some kind of nasty gastrointestinal virus. My two and a half year old daughter got it the worst. She had two days of vomiting followed by about 6 days of bad diarrhea. Towards the end there was a small amount of blood in the diarrhea. Anyways, that worked itself out and for about 48 hours she appeared to be on the mend, and then she suddenly got a high fever and seemed to be in a lot of discomfort. That was last Sunday, so I took her to the ER where they took blood, did x rays and ultrasound, and ruled out it being appendicitis. They did detect some enlarged lymph nodes in her belly, so they called it "mesenteric adenitis". So, the fever seems to have simmered down now, but now she's complaining of her legs hurting! What the heck is going on? I'm freaking out! We're going to see the ped. tomorrow

Anyways, I've done a little reading on reactive arthritis... have any of you kind mamas ever had a little one experience joint pain after towards the end of a viral infection? Any stories, especially positive ones, would be greatly helpful to me right now. Thanks!

This is not a lot of help but DH and I both have achy, painful joints after recovering from stomach viruses. It's been that way for years and it tends to go away after a few days.

I hope your daughter feels better soon.

My dd had this, and wow, I was shocked. this was also after a stomach bug. She was limping, so I assumed she twisted her ankle or something, and took her to afterhours peds to get it checked out, she was crying in pain. I guess this is common, because their first question was "did she just get over a virus?" huh. So after hip x rays, which I thought was SO weird because I assumed it was her ankle, she was diagnosed with aseptic arthritis in her right hip. They gave her a sedative in the office for the xrays, along with motrin, and then tylenol to get her fever down. I was told if her fever was to return, to bring her to the ER. We never had to =D I don't understand the dynamics of why, but in laymens terms, the virus can get into the joints. If it doesn't naturally come out, it can get infected and cause fever, even cause sepsis. It took about 10 days for dd to recover completely, and we were instructed to keep her on the motrin, both as a anti imflamitory, plus to help ward off a high fever. Everything is fine now of course, so thats the happy ending.

My 4yo recently had a reaction following a virus. He couldn't walk and also had a rash on his ankles and lower legs. The pp above mentioned something I have never heard of, so maybe your dd has that. If not, check out my post about what my son went through to see if your dd has the same: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...178&highlight=

I hope you find the answers your looking for. I know how hard it is not knowing.

I had this once as a kid- I literally could not move most of my joints for at least a day, and was in pain for about a week. It was set in overnight and was worst in the beginning.

Thank you kind mamas for your replies. Interesting about the HSP, I've wondered if that might be it... but it doesn't seem to be presenting in that classic rash... wait and see I guess. For now she seems a little better. It's so scary when our precious babies are sick!

Thanks again for your shared wisdom.

I had something like this happen to me when I was really little. I can't remember what sort of virus I had, but I do distinctly remember waking up and not being able to move. I was sleeping in the top bunk, and I couldn't have gotten down if I'd wanted to. My dad had to lift me out.

I think he really thought I was faking it to get out of school. Because what kid just suddenly can't move? (and my dad is the type to NEVER get sick anyhow)

I could move some by later that day, and as I recall was better in a couple days.

My sister also had something similar that lasted for a much longer time. They never did figure out what it was.

Wow. That's so weird. My kids all had a stomach bug a few weeks ago and one of my dd's complained that their legs hurt for a day or two afterward. I honestly thought my oldest was making it up to get out of school work, but when she crawled to the bathroom instead of walking I realized she really was hurting. I was scared but tried to convince myself it was just growing pains and the next day she was fine. Really weird.

I hope your dd is feeling better.
