postpartum periods while breastfeeding?

My dd is almost 15 months and I just got my cycles back in january.

the first one was rediculously heavy and lasted about 5 days.

Now it's been about 5 weeks since the first pp period and I'm on day 3 of very light spotting.

What's going on? Is this common for periods to be this irregular?

I'm wondering the same thing. I got my first period at 23 months, and haven't had another one again (it's been 2 months).

It's not uncommon for some of the first cycles back to be weird like that, sometimes because they're anovulatory. I wouldn't be concerned for now unless the amount of bleeding was at a dangerous level. Cloth pads can sometimes help reduce the heaviness and duration too btw.

I wouldn't worry unless you have a whole year of crazy irregular periods, but if you're really concerned, you can call your midwife or gyn. I think my first cycles were irregular, but I started at 6mo pp, so who knows?

What you are experiencing is in the normal range. Sometimes even after getting your period back it goes away again if your child starts nursing more.

Yes, very common when still nursing.

got my first period 18 months pp...it was practically nothing to the point where, at first, I thought something was wrong - then I realized "oh, it´s my period!"...the 2nd period next month it was VERY heavy (more than it had ever been)

I am still nursing at 34 months and it is still considerably heavier than it used to be (nothing really extreme, though) - particualrly the first couple days, right from the start - which is also new - and the timing is more or less what it was before hand (every 28 - 32 days, give or take)

I'm in the midst of my 1st postpartum period (day 3). Started exactly 9 months after my daughter was born. I was not expecting it so early since baby girl nurses frequently, including all night long.

It sucks! Way, WAY heavier than I've ever experienced before. Cramps too. Ugh, I hope this is not what my period is going to be like, no wonder women dread their periods...it was a breeze before, only a couple of days long with very light bleeding.

I was also surprised - even at 18 months PP - since DS was still nursing a ton 24/7, but I was a little relieved, as well, because sex had been so unbelievably painful (and, pretty much, non existent as a result)...not that it´s perfect now (DS is still nursing at 34 months- I am just starting to night wean him now), but definitely much more tolerable...

I have considerably more cramping now, too - although the amount of days has come right back to where it was...and I also have post-menstrual cramping, which is new and really stinks...but I also akin a lot of the new cramping to the fact that I had a C-section and everything in that general area is just a lot more sensitive...
