Intensity of preteen girl friendships!

I only have a dd preteen, not a ds, so my experience is colored by this, just to put that out there. My dd has gone from a kind of take it or leave it, not super connected kind of kid with regard to friends, to seeming to have very intense friendships with her girlfriends. They really have almost their own language, based on what I hear, or at least shorthand for what they're saying. They laugh and laugh, tell gross jokes, talk about boys and plan elaborate get togethers, which rarely actually happen! They hug, all the time, and say "love you".

I'm just amazed. It's funny and sweet, and feels kind of precarious at moments. It's great to hear the connections, but I know that they can also fall apart quickly.

Ahhh...just another in my observations of preteen life. Anyone else?

My daughter is not there with her friendships just yet, but I remember this so vividly from when I was young. The relationships were so intense it would be like a serious long-term romantic relationship without the romance aspect. I think those friendships mattered so much more than any crushes or "boyfriends" I had when I was young. And when they fall apart it is like the world is crumbling. Oooh, you just brought me back!

My best friend and I are STILL like that in a lot of ways, even though she lives over 1000 miles away! We have been best friends since we were preteens at 9 and 12. We have a lot of memories that go back over the years, and talk a lot through the phone, email and facebook yet. We try to get to visit each other every couple of years if we can. But my point is, some of those friendships can continue on for life too!
