What is this?

My 5 week old boy is exclusively breast fed. I noticed early on that his tongue is white, and I assumed that's because of the milk clinging to it. Today I put my finger in his mouth and I felt what I thought was a tooth coming in. It felt sharp/rough and upon looking in his mouth, there's a white spot (like the tooth is just under the gums and not poked through yet) but its not where I thought it would be for a tooth. Its more off to the side of his gums rather than the top of his gums. I thought maybe these two signs were thrush, so I looked up pictures of thrush, and it doesn't look like that. I'm perplexed about this.

the spot is facing forward, right? not facing up on top of the gum? sounds like a gum cyst i think? i cant remember exactly the term our ped used, but whatever it was called, it was normal and doesnt really mean anything. i dont think your babe would be getting teeth this early!

the spot is on the top jaw towards the back, where the molars would be, but its on the side of the gums, toward the roof of the mouth, and not pointing down as a tooth would.

Its good to hear that it might be a cyst and nothing to worry about. I was also wondering how common it was to start teething at this age.

Are you cleaning his mouth every day with a wet face cloth? I didn't know I was supposed to do this until he was already a few weeks old.

I never heard of that. I never did it with any of my kids. What is the reason for doing it?

It might could be an epstein pearl. My son had one of those and I had thought he might have thrush or be teething too at the time.
