Over active letdown

It's when your milk lets down with such force that it sprays out several inches (or feet, heh) from your body.

3 babies no pacifiers. I did work on regulating my over supply and if they don't want to nurse than I have different methods on soothing besides nursing.

By dd used a paci from 2 months to 6 months. She just recently gave it up on her on.

Maybe I'm one of the odd ones out but I never gave my DS a paci. I don't think that there's anything natural about sucking on a piece of plastic. I did have OAL but I also had oversupply (is it possible to have OAL without oversupply?) so I tried to manage my supply better (feeding on one side for up to 12 hours). He nursed every 15mins - 1/2 hour at that age (OK he still nurses that frequently sometimes now!) and I did a lot of research that suggests it's normal in other cultures for babies to nurse several times an hour. I didn't want to substitute that with a man-made object. I guess it's a personal decision & I doubt prudent use of a paci would destroy your nursing relationship but it's totally not something I would try unless I had to be away from my baby for some reason. (Oh and all this is just my personal stance on it, I'm not trying to offend anyone or anything like that!! Go ahead & use the paci if it works for you!)

You explained my reasons much better, plus we are NFPers as well and practice ecological bf'ing.

DS would not take it until he was 3 months old but we used it. In fact, we still do and DS is three. He still sucks when he sleeps and does not seem ready to give it up.

My daughter gave hers up on her own when she was about 2 and a half and she is 7 now. She has a problem with grinding her teeth at night and was using a mouth guard that her dentist recommended for about a month till she wouldnt use it anymore because it was hurting her mouth. I decided to try allowing her to try a pacifier at night to see if it would help and its made a huge difference. She is no longer complaining about her mouth hurting and is getting better sleep at night because of it. I am hoping I dont get bashed for allowing her to have a pacifier at her age. Is there anyone else here that still allows their older child a pacifier for whatever reason? I would love to know that I am not alone here. Thank you

Mary

Both mine had/have one...

DS1 I introduced it around 6wks, and he used it mostly in the car and at daycare until 6mos when he gave it up on his own. DS2 I gave it to him when he was a few hours old...I was exhausted and the only way I was going to bed able to get through the night was to use it (DH was exhausted to and even though it was a hospital birth there is no nursery for healthy babies where I delivered). He is 7mos and loves it...he could suck on it all day...he also loves to nurse and loves a bottle and loves his fingers and his toys....pretty much everything!

But seriously, to me it WAS an "AP" thing that I introduced the paci. I do whatever is needed for my babies to be happy. I physically cannot (mostly because of work, but, also because of having to kids, driving, etc) nurse every time my babe needs to suck, so the paci is the next best thing...both of mine also get frustrated nursing if they only want to comfort suck (unless going to sleep), so both DH and I have often held them and comforted them while they sucked a paci, I also give/gave them a paci while wearing them a lot and it helps them fall asleep.

MY only regret is not introducing it earlier with DS1 because he cried SOOOOOOOOOOO much less after I did introduce it. But...this is just my experience and I am sure each situation is different and you know what is best for you and your family. :-)

We also used a paci no problems starting at 2 weeks, he just wanted to suck but didn't ALWAYS want milk. He self weaned from the paci a month or so ago (at 8mo).

we do

There's a point in bf my dd, 13 weeks old, where she wants to nurse to sleep and isn't actively drinking the boob, she's just suckling, which i cannot STAND.
I pop the paci in and she is happy. hopefully, we won't regret it later, but it keeps her from wearing out my boobies!

oh.. and, she really isn't getting any milk at that point. she is having no problems gaining weight, and we've been doing that for quite a while. she'll want the paci other times, too, and i give it to her, but right now with some teeth coming in, she is much more interested in "chewing" on it..

DS (2.5 yo) loves his paci and his milk both. As he got control of his hands, I started letting him hold the paci at bedtime, that way he gets to decide when he needs more milk and when he just wants the paci to suck. Although if I hear him slurp-slurping on the paci, I'll try to take it out and offer the breast again. Sometimes he lets me, other times he bites down and won't let go of the paci.

Maybe plastic isn't natural, but some form of substitute has been around for a long time. One of my grandmothers used to call babies "little sugar-tit". A sugar-tit being a piece of cloth that you stuck a sugar cube in and let the baby suck on.

We gave him one at 2 weeks. I know. Crazy. It never stopped him from nursing though. He stopped taking it around 11 weeks and that was just that. I have tried to give him others over the months but he just doesn't even realize he can suck them. At 16 months he is still nursing. Never a problem.

I'm using a pacifier with a baby who loves to suck, just not at the breast, and no issues so far (3 mos).
