Over-active letdown, or is this normal?

My son is just about three months old, and has been EBF since birth. We had some trouble initially due to his tongue-tie, but my supply was always plentiful and his weight gain has been very steady - he was in the 90th percentile at his two month appointment. When I'm nursing him and I feel my letdown, he often will pull off the breast. He used to choke/sputter at this point, but lately that has stopped. When he pulls off, my milk will spray out pretty forcefully - like a good 8-12 inches, if I don't block it. Is this a "normal" letdown? It has pretty much always been this way, but I sort of thought it would have gotten less forceful by now. DS does have mucusy diapers once in a while, but is otherwise pooping/wetting normally.

My letdown was like that, likely due to a huge oversupply on my end. For the first 6-8 months, I had to spray into a towel before I could latch my son back on, otherwise he would nurse and choke and vomit afterwards.

Sounds like over-active letdown to me. . .but its not a problem as long as your babe has learned to deal with it and it seems like he has. My DS (4months) will do the same, when the let-down gets too much he'll just pull off and wait for the "squirt" to die down.

My letdown was like that till DD was over a year old...!!!

Hopefully yours will even out sooner than mine did!

In the meantime, you can scare your DH with the party trick of shooting milk across the room...I got a kick out of that a few times.

Oh, and if you're having letdown spraying on both sides, you should get these: http://www.amazon.com/Milkies-Milk-S.../dp/B001SMBRWO

Pop them on the other side and you can collect the milk to store. I never had them, but a friend of mine swears by them, and I will definitely get some next time around.
