Need recommendations for a friend...I was thinking colloidal silver, but she isn't near any health food stores and will drive tomorrow if needed to look, but what else? Anyone want to help me think of anything easy at home?

home remedies for strep?

I will recommend one thing, with a caveat: strep turns into scarlet fever. ask me how I know.
my son NEVER got the sore throat!!! just fever and stomachache for a week. and THEN...a rash. scarlet fever. I would not ever mess with it, as scarlet fever turns into rheumatic fever and that can damage heart muscle silently. It's very dangerous and I would never forgive myself if my stupidity hurt my kid. (that was my only kid to ever get strep at ALL, i had no clue).
You can try a bee propolis and echinacea throat spray, propolis is very good at fighting strep in particular.
I will also give high marks to large amounts of vit. c, 2 droppers ful of echinacea, and bee propolis capsules, 4 x a day to fight off infections in general. It wiped out my mastitis in one day, when I had a fever of 103 the day before.
again, that was for an adult. I would always get a child antibiotics, but that's IMHO.

The strep discussion seems very similar to the measles discussion. Everyone agrees that contracting measles can result in death, but some people decide not to vaccinate for it, and some do not do it because the rate of measles is low in their area--even if a measles outbreak occurred locally, they still wouldn't go find an MMR for their kids.
MDC has a fair number of planning-type threads on how to prepare for measles, and the strep discussions seem pretty similar.

The problem in that comparison is that while measles has a fairly low rate of infection in many areas, strep does not.
Strep was also directly responsible for my grandmother requiring several open heart surgeries over her lifetime to repair and replace her heart valves that were damaged from complications of strep.

Yes, strep has a very high infection rate, that's actually why I think that appropriate support during a symptomatic infection is a reasonable approach to start with for those who want to take that path.

This article, with a citation, says that in the winter and the spring, up to 20% of asymptomatic kids in temperate climates may be group A strep carriers.
This article below, that doesn't have a citation, says 10-20% of asymptomatic school-age kids without any season indicated.

I wouldn't ever tell someone who wanted to use antibiotics not to, but to me, for people who are interested in using a different approach, it seems reasonable, _because_ there is so much strep around in asymptomatic kids.
