Friend with PCOS, 10wks pg, sick

I'm thrilled for her that she's gotten pregnant and wanted to encourage her or recommend any sources or help for her nausea. She's been in the ER, on meds, is naturally worried about m/c. Is it silly to recommend things that help mild nausea (sea bands, ginger, etc) if she has to take meds for big nausea? Are there any threads here she can read for encouragement?

try the september and october DDCs over in Im Pregnant... there are a lot of threads in them about women with HG (severe morning sickness) who are medicated and still taking other remedies.

I can tell her though... as long as she takes her medicine and is sure to keep liquids down she should have no worries. If she cannot keep liquids down she can talk to her doctor about going to the hospital and having IV fluids put in (you dont have to be admitted to do this when its due to morning sickness and used as prevention of ending up in the hospital for the remainder of the morning sickness)

We have a great pg after infertility thread here... I do believe some of the gals have dealt with PCOS and would be able to reassure her

If she has pcos she may still be on metformin (if she was taking it to help her chances of conceiving). I found as soon as I stopped the metformin my m/s disappeared.

Does she not have care that is monitoring this?

Probably. One of my least favorite pregnancy experiences the first time was having HG and getting all sorts of well-meaning but useless advice, mostly because I'd already tried everything remedy I could find on the interent. I tried ginger, sea bands, etc etc etc. (Second to that is explaining, weekly, that yes, I'm still puking. Yes, at 33 weeks. Yes, on meds. Yes, I puked the entire 37 weeks of DD's pregnancy. Please stop asking me! I know they mean well, but really people!) I need the meds and even they don't keep me from throwing up all the time. If she's in the ER, she needs the meds too and I wouldn't recommend anything unless she's looking for other things to try.

The Help HER site has some forums that are useful for HG support, info on meds, etc: http://forums.helpher.org/index.php

I hope she finds something that helps her feel better soon. HG stinks.

I wonder if she would be able to keep B6 and B12 supplements down? Women with PCOS can be more prone to B6 and B12 deficiencies during pregnancy, and it is especially common in pregnant women taking Metformin. I have heard of a good number of women with PCOS experiencing an improvement in pregnancy nausea and vomiting after adding 100 mg of B6 and 2000 mcg of B12 to their daily regimens (several hours before or after Metformin, for better absorption). The endocrinologist I see for my PCOS encourages all his pregnant PCOS patients to add B6 and B12 upon receiving their BFPs. I was continually sick for several days before I learned I was pregnant and did find that the added vitamins seemed to take the edge off. I felt pretty lousy for my first three months, but I think it would have been much worse had I not taken the B6 and B12 every day.

Thanks. She said she was helped a little bit by having her m/w lower the progesterone she was taking. Yes, she's getting care but support from friends can be encouraging. We've talked a lot in the past about birth and natural choices so she has come to me for advice a few times. I'll def remember not to suggest things as she's already doing a lot, thanks for the tip.

I sent her the link to one of the threads on here for HG support.
