All of my kids are/were fairly late talkers. DD1 never said a single word until 19 months, but then she caught up just fine and by 3 was even a bit ahead in her language development. I'm worried about my twins, though. They've just turned three this week. I'm not worried about vocabulary or grammer-- they both speak in long sentences, and know lots of words, and can use prepositions and all kinds of complex grammatical structures like that. It's articulation I'm worried about, particularly for DD2. She's a very bright kid and chatters all day, and uses lots of sophisticated words, but I can still only understand about 2/3 of what she says and I think most other people, including DH, can understand even less. DS is also difficult to understand, but less so, but then again he uses simpler sentences and simpler vocabulary, so it's easier to figure out what me means anyway.

The other day DD2 is walking around telling me that her toe hurt--- "My toe is hurting me because I banged it, and it's horrible" is what she was saying, and it took about ten minutes and a lot of crying and frustration before I could make out what she wanted to tell me. And she gets so MAD about it.

Is there any kind of objective measure for how clear a child's speech should be at any age?
