9 month old with a cold...won't nurse

Hi!

My DS who is 9 1/2 months old just got his first cold last week. He's had it now for about 9 days and he has been extremely difficult to nurse. His nose is congested and runny, so when he tries to latch, he can't breathe well, so he just gives up. He hasn't had a fever. Only slight cough on and off. His mood is his usual happy self, but I am concerned because I don't think he's getting enough fluids (not many wet diapers). I keep a cool mist humidifier on at nap time and night, and I keep him in the bathroom when showering. I use a syringe to suck out the mucus, but it doesn't seem to help. I'm worried about him not getting much breast milk throughout the day. Can anyone offer any advice on what I can do to help him want to nurse. He wants to, but within seconds just pushes away. Also, is 9 days a long time for any of your breastfed babies to have a cold?

Thank you so much!

Nine days is not too long to have a cold if he is happy and acting otherwise normally. Is he able to drink from a sippy cup? You could express breastmilk into that to keep your supply up, he will be getting liquids, and there won't be any nipple preference (because you are using a cup, not a bottle).

That seems the easiest solution to me. Hope he feels better soon!
