I ate sushi.....

.....and I'm not feeling guilty about it!!! Because it was absolutely scrumptious

DP and I were talking about it at dinner tonight, and I've never heard of anyone getting sick from sushi IRL. I've heard of salmanilla and other poisoning in multiple other things quite frequently. The feeling you get after eating sushi is so wonderful. Without all of the additives and grease and what not you never get that overload feeling of being 'full'. It's all pure and full of nutrients that haven't been cooked out.

So this is what I'm telling myself tonight, and I'm in lala land after a wonderful meal with my sweat heart I may even be naughty enough to have half a glass of wine

Happy Valentines day everyone!!!

I've eaten sushi during this pregnancy, too. However, when I eat a lot of it (which I usually do, because I always order too much) then I feel full.

I totally went out for sushi last week. I decided the admonitions against eating it are completely bogus, as the best sushi fish has been frozen for freshness, thus killing any parasites, and is eaten as fresh as possible, and thus not a risk for spoilage illnesses. I simply chose the low mercury things like salmon, crab, and scallops, and scarfed away! I'm really happy about this because it's SO delicious and healthy and makes me feel so good to eat it.

oooh, this was the date DH and I had tonight because dd kept making me read her sushi book... oh my goodness it was sooo insanely good. I left comfortably full and very very happy tonight. mmmm.

I've been eating it - avoiding the raw, but eating eel and other cooked things. I figure if I'm craving it so much, I must need it.

My pregnant sister and I (also pregnant) had sushi the other night. It was divine! Her DH picked it up and while he was waiting, he mentioned to the sushi chef that he was bringing it home to two pregnant ladies. She said that yes, in Japan, no one thinks twice. But here in N.A. when people ask if a pregnant lady can eat sushi, they have to answer 'that's between you and your Dr.'. lol.

I've had it a few times this pregnancy and plan to have it at least once more before the babe comes. MMmmmmm.

There was an article in the New York Times a few months back that talked about food poisoning, and it basically said that if you took shellfish out of the equation, the rate of food-borne illness for seafood would be drastically lower than that of poultry.

Seeing your subject line is making me crave sushi like no tomorrow now Now I need to find a place that's open and willing to make me some avocado rolls at 10:45 on a Sunday morning

Sorry about that. I crave it all the time, even when not pregnant, so I know how powerful that craving can be.

plummeting I do feel full in the sense of being satisfied, but I find it is a different feeling that if we went out for a burger, iykwim? It's a clean, healthy full, not an overwhelming, gassy, stuffed up to your chin full. ewe.

BlackSheepPDX Totally agree. I haven't seen a sushi place yet that I wouldn't trust. They are very diligent about proper preparation.

Staceychev Interesting. I can see that being true. Shell fish are more 'dirty' I guess. They're bottom feeders, so in the world of sea food it would be the equivelant of eating pork. Or so I've heard. Too bad because I shell fish.

I ate sushi last night too! Sooo good! Then I had dreams about people telling me not to eat it.

@ MammaB21: If you're cooking your shellfish, I'm sure you're fine!

This is my fourth baby and I never quit sushi. I figured millions of Japanese women can't be wrong. Plus, being so nauseous, it is one of the few things I can eat bc the foods are whole and simple and unprocessed.

Um where am I from lol? Sushi is considered a morning sickness aid in my family. We eat it at least once a week, and sometimes more when I'm preggers.

How did I miss that one!

Oh yum, maybe that's what is for date night tonight! And miso soup. Mmmmmm! I've had sushi twice since getting pregnant, both times at the same restaurant that I know 100% I can trust. Can't go there tonight (too far) but maybe elsewhere. My MW said when asked something about supposed to tell me I shouldn't, but that they all (the MWs in the practice) do/did. Kind of a non-answer/you decide thing.

Ohhh that sounds delish! I'm a big sushi eater normally but cut it out when pregnant. I'm one of those better safe than sorry gals. I did have one question though. I thought it wasn't so much if mama got I'll but the baby. You know with listeria. From what I've read if the sushi has been frozen it should be ok but at my local sushi spot they can't tell me a darn thing.

I think your right, but I know there are other concerns as well. Listeria will make mom sick. It presents with flu like symptoms, fever, body aches. Babe can get it, but mom does get sick first. Anybody can get sick with it, it's just that it is more likely for pregnant women to catch it. The list I just looked at didn't list sushi as a culprit, but it did say that uncooked vegetables and meat could carry it. But that sure isn't stopping me from eating uncooked veggies

You can't go wrong with veggie rolls

I've been eating sushi with raw fish in both pregnancies. I feel as though the risk of food poinsoning is low and certainly much lower than with lunchmeat which many pregnant women contiunue to eat.

I do try and avoid shellfish though - not because of poisoning, but because they contain higher concentrations of heavy metals etc because they are at the bottom of the food chain. Though I could totally murder a dozen oysters au natural.

Mmmmm...maybe I will make some sushi for lunch (though with canned fish because I don't have any raw on hand).

I just had a 10 lb+ sushi baby! I craved sushi all the time with my chunky boy!

the week after we found out we were preggy, we went and DH bought me a fabulous tuna tataki salad. It was fabulous and I loved every second. BTW, if you are ever worried about food poisoning, a teaspoon or two of vinegar will kill food borne bacteria.
I've wondered about the accuracy of them saying sushi was so dangerous. I've never gotten sick from it in all these years.
Next time my girls talk their grandpa into having sushi Im SO going with them!
