Count me in. I've been heavily in planning mode for days now. Dh and I have decided to ditch the classical education private school and homeschool full-time.
I'm in the process of collecting resources now.Math:
Singapore (and some stuff from other programs thrown in occasionally); living mathPhonics/Spelling
: AAS and Words Their Way and possibly Read, Write and TypeReading Practice:
whatever he feels like readingLiterature and reading comprehension:
I've got some great book lists from which to select, but I'll go with his interests. For comprehension, we'll mostly do discussion.Writing/Grammar:
Some HWOT, but otherwise no program. We'll mostly write about history and science stuff or whatever else he is inspired to write. We'll tackle a little bit of grammar though, mostly just sentence features.History/Science
: I'm very excited about this. We've talked to ds about the Big Bang theory, evolution, space, and earth science since he was a little guy. (One of his favorite bedtimes stories when he was 3 was the Big Bang story). I'm collecting resources about matter and energy, astronomy/space, the solar system, earth science/geology, early life, and prehistory. We'll be exploring all this mostly through picture books, some educational video, lots of experiments and field trips. These are all topics that he has been passionate about for a long time, but we've only looked at them in a sporadic way. I think that ds is going to totally dig looking at his interests more systematically.Geography:
basic map skills, seven continents, four oceans, basic cultural geography.Art:
Ds is not
an artsy kid. Mostly, we'll do projects that are related to history and science, working in whatever media that inspire him.
I'm hoping to join up with a local hs group that meets once a week for field trips. Ds also does aikido, swimming and OT once a week.
I've made it a goal to do some of my own learning too. As a kid, I had ten years worth of classical piano lessons that have amounted to nothing. I'm making it goal to re-learn, but to do it in a very fun way. I want to learn to play by ear and just do cute little ditties. Dh is learning guitar so this should be fun.
