We just bought the Whirlpool one they sell at the local home improvement chain. It was $147, if that helps. You do not have to make any holes if you already have a sprayer. The RO faucet will go where the sprayer is. I did go ahead and replace the faucet, too, with a nice one w/the sprayer that comes out of the faucet because I just cannot do without my sprayer!

We use a Brita, BPA isn't a concern there but it doesn't remove Fluoride. If I could afford it I would have another method built into the home water system.

We have a berkey, I thought it was too expensive at first but the water tastes wonderful and the filters don't have to be changed very often plus they can be cleaned. It's stainless steel. The only plastic is the knob on the lid and the spout. We drink much more water now and the water stays nice and cool on the countertop because of the metal. I first thought about a reverse osmosis system but it's all plastic and seemed very fussy to install and maintain.

oh hey just got an email from brita:
The pitcher lids and filter housings are made of Polypropylene plastic. The reservoirs and pitchers are made either from NAS (a Styrene based plastic) or SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile). The soft-touch handles are made from an elastomer called Santoprene (not to be confused with Latex or Neoprene). Our products do not contain any bisphenol A and are all tested by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) for safety and wetted contact. Unfortunately the pitcher materials are not recyclable, and therefore do not have a plastic number. Please contact us at any time if you have additional questions

so i guess we are good then...but idk about this flouride thing. arent we suppose to have flouride though?

We drink it straight from the tap. Our tap water is delicious. There's a brewery close by that uses the same water we drink.

If I didn't like or trust my tap water I would probably have some sort of filtration system installed in my home (unless it were cost prohibitive).

We drink water straight from our tap but in the last city we lived in we used a Brita filter. If I felt there was a need for us to filter here I would go back to using Brita or install an under the counter filter system.

I would only use purchased bottled water in an emergency situation, never for every day use unless there was some clear reason to do so. I think extracting a large volume of water, bottling it and transporting it long distances is too harmful to the environment and long term sustainability.

They're not reverse osmosis, they are purifying filters (meaning REALLY tiny pores). The filters last about a year at three gallons per day (which is what we use) and cost, I think, $75 to replace. The initial cost for the whole thing is about $300 but varies by $100 or so depending on the size you choose. When the filters start to slow down you can flush them with water and keep using them but about a year is all you'll get out of them. There is an option to attach up to eight (rather than the regular two) which would allow the set to last longer but that is more for situations where there is a really large system and is being used constantly for large amounts of water. Just go to the berkey website and it explains all of this in more detail.
