Calm vs. Crazy babies - spinoff thread

The coffee while pregnant thread got me thinking...Is there any correlation between the activity level of a babe in the womb and after birth?

DS1 was very active in the womb and kicked me constantly. When he was born, be never slept and was very high needs. Recently (at age 3) he was diagnosed with SPD and we are dealing with all sorts of behavioral stuff with him. I am worried that DS2 will be the same way. He is also active in the womb.

Anyone notice a correlation between activity and personality?

I'm not terribly sure. DD was pretty active in my belly, and always kicked and squirmed as soon as I stopped moving. We were sure that she'd be active and running, jumping, all over the place.

She was a pretty high-needs baby, but that was due to a milk allergy that we had a hard time tracking down. Personality-wise at almost 3, she's very quiet and shy and loves to sit and be read to. She's always been a bit slower (but not really delayed) on gross motor skills.

DD was a crazy, insane, never-rested, constant-movement baby in-utero, but was pretty calm, mellow, and a sound sleeper once she was born. *But* she hated to be swaddled and would totally fight and squirm until she could get herself free--I always wondered if hating the space contraint was what made her so wild in the womb!

DS was very calm in the uterus, NEVER having big movements like rolling over and as a baby he was pretty high needs and very physically active. Now at almost 3 he's not a "wild boy" at all, but he is always very busy with intentions, just not running for the sake of running.

Ds was very active while I was pregnant (seriously I thought it was a joke to count 10 movements - I would have panicked if he'd slowed down that much). So far he is pretty laid back but not a fabulous sleepers & a very busy boy.

DD was crazy in the womb in the daytime. Calm when I was sleeping. Loads of big movements right up til she was born. She was a very easy-going mellow baby and newborn who loved to sleep and chill. Complete opposite as a toddler.

I had an anterior placenta with both so it really muffled the movements. My dd sent me into panic with several trips to the ER over not feeling movement for a while. I went so much that they scheduled me for nsts to help with the worrry over movement. She was a very calm and mellow newborn who slept well. She became more emotinal as she got older but she isn't a get into everything kid.

My ds moved much more even with an anterior placenta. I never had panic with him over no movement. He was a less calm high needs baby who did not sleep well. He not so bad now as a toddler and has mellowed out some but he is a pretty active little guy who gets into everything.

I have deffinatly read that when your baby is active in the womb, tends to be when they are active (aka - awake) once they are outside the womb.

This was very true for my son! When he was 'awake' in my womb - he was awake outside when he was born too.

Of course - that all quickly changes from week to week but it can give you some idea. For example, I know a lot of people who just can't sleep at night due to a very awake baby...No doubt, they were pretty awake come evening when born as well! (much to the parents delight hehe)

My son was never 'awake' at night in the womb - and when he was born he wasn't either! You may think I am lucky, but it still meant I had to make sure I woke up to feed him! hehe

This one does tend to be more awake in the evening - and I have to pee much more in the evening as wel. So he/she is just preparing me for when they are born no doubt! hehe

My kids were all crazy active in the womb. The doctors and u/s techs were always commenting on it and asking if I'd had caffeine (it didn't matter if I did or not, they were just all crazy). When they were babies, they were all wonderful. Alert but excellent sleepers. Dd1 has never stopped moving. Ds was a little more mellow. Dd2 has energy, but it more laid back than either of the other 2. Either that or I'm more laid back and don't realize she's being active.

DS was a mover and a shaker in utero, and was a mover and a shaker as an infant. Now I think most of his more mellow baby-peers have caught up to him, energy-level-wise, but he's still probably on the active end of normal.

DS was very laid back in the womb... hed move but never anything crazy...

once out hes kind of a nice mix... he has his crazy times (which get my whole family rolling on the floor laughing) but hes JUST as happy chilling out on the couch with a book.

DD was very active in the womb and is the same... shes just as happy outside playing football or inside coloring a picture.

DS1: didn't move hardly at all in womb was not a mellow baby. He never slept, developed colic at two months and cried nonstop until four months. He's totally chilled now though.

DD2: Moved a bit but was pretty mellow in womb. She was a fairly chilled baby but not a chilled child.

DD3: Moved ALL THE TIME in the womb. I felt her constantly. She amused the US people and the dr. at her intolerance of any poking whatsoever. She slept through the first six weeks of her life. Dh got to the point where he was begging her to wake up:P Now at almost five she seems to have a normal energy level.

This one moves a normal amount but the kicks and punches are hard.

Ds was super active in utero - he was a high needs baby and as a toddler was diagnosed with SPD. Now at age 7 he has Aspergers and ADD .. he's pretty darn active. We were playing a board game last night and he was playing it, but never sat still for one moment.

This sounds like DD. She never stopped moving in the womb. Once she stopped moving for a few hours and I went to the hospital because I thought something had happened. She has a lot of sensory issues and is constantly stubbing her toe or hitting her head because she just can't hold still. She bounces constantly!
DS was a little less active in the womb, and while he is a very, very busy, active kid he doesn't have that excess energy pouring out of him like his sister does.

DS1 and DS2 were fairly calm in the womb and were very different babies (DS1 was more "high needs" although that is probably an exaggeration). DS3 was by far the most active - very active - I thought he was trying to claw his way out. And he is super calm and easy. So for me, there was no correlation.

DS was a very strong very active baby in the womb and has always been a very strong very active baby outside the womb. He hit the ground running.

DD was crazy active in the womb. It seemed like she was always moving and kicking me. She was very responsive and would move when she heard noises or if I poked her or if I stood up, or.....well, she just moved all the time....lol. I would sit back a bit and watch my belly jumping all over the place. When she was born, she was alert for a newborn, but really relaxed and easy going. As an infant she was 'lazy'. We always joked about it. She wasn't really interested in doing much physically. She was right on time, or early for all her other milestones, but she took forever to sit up, roll over, crawl and walk.

My friend just had a baby who was always super calm in the whom. I would ask if she was kicking a lot and my friend would just kind of look at me funny. lol. She seems to be a pretty calm and sleepy baby so far, but we'll see how things develop. For DD it was the exact opposite, so she might end up with a wild one.

DS was very active in the womb. Always kicking, and I couldn't sleep at all in my last trimester from his kicking. When he was born he hated being swaddled- he had to be stretched out, he had colic, and as a toddler is very active. This baby is also very active. Not much on the kicking, but he does move constantly.

I think in-womb action is a good indication of how a child may behave when it's born, but I don't think there's a real direct correlation.

I think there may be some merit to the theory.

DS was very active in the womb and is an extremely high energy, active child. However, he has a laid back, calm, go-with-the-flow personality and sleeps well too. So at least he's balanced
