Sewing NB prefolds

I've started building my stash for the new baby due in June and I've never used cloth. I'm using the prefold pattern here and was planning on using flannel for the inner layer, flannel for the soaker pad and terry cloth for the outer layer. I changed the measurements slightly so that the finished product will be 8"X12" which is the size of all of the nb prefolds I've found online.

So here's the question. For a nb prefold can I use 4 layers for the soaker pad instead of the 6 that is recommended? I laid out the pieces with a 6 layer pad and the diaper seemed really bulky and hard to fold, I'm afraid it won't fit properly in the Bummis wraps I'm getting.

If it matters, I'm using old receiving blankets for the flannel.

I made fitteds for my newborn, they were two layers of flannel in the fitted, and then a trifold soaker of terry and flannel, so ultimately eight layers total in the wet zone. That was more than enough if we changed him frequently- I don't think newborns generally wet that much at a time. I think if you can reduce the layers to reduce bulk, I'd do it!

maybe you could go w/ the 4 layers then make some extra lay in doublers just in case 4 layers is not enough. I have a bunch of home made 4 layer flannel microfleece topped doublers that I've been using w/ DD since she was tiny (she does not like to feel wet & I could not change every 15min when she was tiny). They really don't add much bulk.

To make them I just stacked 4 layers of flannel topped w/ microfleece & did a tight zigzag around the edges (I didn't have a serger at the time). Almost 2yrs later I have had only 1 out of almost 3doz fall apart.
