Can I vent here? I don't want to start my own thread because I know someone will tell me I'm being petty and I hope the people posting here will understand
First let me clarify. I am (usually :LOL ) happy my kids have a large extended family that loves them. I appreciate that they give gifts because they love the kids and I think the intentions are great.
Having said that, we are drowning in KID CLUTTER! My kids are the ONLY children in the family right now so they are being spoiled rotten with gifts! Every single holiday is a gift giving occasion!
Easter for example. When I was a kid it was just candy (ok, not that that is perfect :LOL) This past Easter my kids got plenty of candy, but they also got multiple gifts from multiple people. My dad's girlfriend (really nice woman who's been around long before they were born) gave them each a gift bag full of stuff. Each of them got a magnetic Harry Potter mirror, a miniature lunchbox, a Caillou doll and something else I can't remember. My grandmother gave each kid multiple toys too. A knock off barbie for my dd and a soldier (complete with MACHINE GUN) for my not even 2 year old (I thanked her kindly and that thing was gone so fast your head would spin!) Grandma gave them other stuff too, but I can't even remember what. My MIL made an egg hunt for the kids and happily told me don't worry, I put in lots of TOYS so it wouldn't be just candy. I appreciate her reasoning, but I would have preferred it be candy. Or how about some candy and some other stuff like nuts, raisins, whatever? Instead we came home from her house with MORE tiny little cluttery toys.
The other day my well meaning step mom came over with a bag of stuffed animals for the kids to pick through. Then she was going to bring the rest to her work to give away to disadvantaged kids (she works in family law). Ok, not only do we not need more stuffed animals, but it doesn't seem right that my kids are getting first pick of these toys. These were toys she got with her own money so she can choose what to do with them of course (and I think she's great to do this for the kids at her work) but my kids are very much NOT lacking for toys!
I really don't see a solution for me. I don't see how there is any way to stem the tide politely without hurting feelings (and I really don't want to hurt anyone's feelings -- they all mean well!). So I just bag 'em up and send them off to the Vietnam Vets or GoodWill.
It's just on my mind right now because next month my son has a birthday and you know there will be tons more junk coming in. More soldier dolls with guns, more batteried, LOUD toys, more stuffed animals.
ACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!! This is one hardship of parenting I honestly wasn't prepared for, :LOL!
