What IS this?

I couldn't not share this. Weird baby-moving contraption.

A friend sent me this link, asking what the baby contraption is. I have, thankfully never seen anything like that before, and I can't imagine someone wearing their babes ion something like that. This contraption is being sold on a website that caters to the needs of disabled people. Looks very uncomfortable for the babes! What do you guys think?

It isn't really a baby carrier: from the description it seems to be for rescue professionals. You put it on kind of like a poncho, and then you can evacuate multiple babies in an emergency, specifically in case of fire- it's made of fire-resistant materials.

hth!

wow, that's a pretty terrible design regardless! I can't see how it's a good idea to have baby dangling down low like that.

I don't get the impression it is in any way supposed to be an ergonomic carrier. It's for something like a fire breaking out in a daycare center: the copy explains that it's easy and fast to pull on and put the babies into and get them to safety. It's not for wearing around town.

Yep, I understand that, but even for evacuation and safety reasons, I think it's a bad idea to have babies dangling down out of arm's reach. You can't cover their faces with your hands, for example, and they're just less under your physical control when they're that low.

True, but you could potentially carry four or five out at once (two in the 'carrier' at your sides, one on your chest, more held in your arms or holding your hands).

In this case I think speed and carrying capacity are more important than anything else.

I actually think this is quite perfect for what it is used for. It should not be on for more than a few minutes max and it helps save more babies... but yes not a baby carrier in the sense of the word that we are used to for sure!

My mom is a hospital LC, and she said that the nurses on the baby floor have something like these. She described them as aprons with pockets for four babies, so the nurses can evacuate the babies if they have to. (I got nightmares from imagining a scenario where my baby would have to be evacuated by someone other than me but I'm glad these exist for the situation).

wow after watching the Haiti footage, I had nightmares of trying to carry babies to safety.

Now maybe my brain will add these little aprons to the scenario.

It's a really good idea. I've never heard of this before now. I think it's better to have the babies in this for a few minutes in case of emergency rather then risk waiting for someone else to give you a hand to get them to safety.

In the case of fire and smoke, the lower you are, the better the air quality

I agree that being in a terribly uncomfortable contraption such as this is preferable to being subjected to fire . Obviously I should have read the instructions. I was too side-tacked looking at the terrible design. Still, it could be improved upon, a lot.
