Hey,

I heard about this book from some of you, and I finished it yesterday. Anyone else read it yet? Fascinating.

I wish I had my own copy (instead of the library's), because I would have highlighted half of it.

How cool is that! I just picked this book up from the library yesterday! I am really appreciating what I'm reading so far. I also picked up a booked called 'honey I wrecked the kids" which has also been enlightening.

I'm not fully ready to discuss the books yet, but I look forward to the discussion to come if anyone else is reading this book.

What insights do you want to share from having read it emilyash?

Can you give a brief outline of what it was about? I haven't read it yet but I'm interested.

I am up to the lying chapter. I thought that the chapter on race was really interesting and I have totally been taking the author's advice on being very upfront and open about it. The other day, Tierney came home and told me that her favorite teacher was the one with "the dark brown skin." That was another great opportunity to discuss diversity. I'll jump in to discuss once I have finished and digested it, too.

Brief outline: new research findings on child development, many counter to commonly-held beliefs/practices.

The chapters include "inverse power of praise (effort counts more than results); why insufficient sleep adversely affects kids' capacity to learn; why white parents don't talk about race; why kids lie; that evaluation methods for giftedness and accompanying programs don't work; why siblings really fight (to get closer)" (from amazon.com)

I think I was most floored by the Tools of the Mind program for preschools/kindergarten, and it's results.

Nothing was surprising, per se, when I related the stories to my husband he said "that makes sense", but it was definitely a great synthesis and summary of current research.

It even talked about how fighting (with your partner/spouse) AND making up in front of the kids is better than fighting behind closed doors (cause they know its happening anyway). And if they get to see the resolution they will gain social skills themselves.
