Nutritional yeast and candida question.

Hi ladies,

I was wondering if nutritional yeast is a good choice for our family. I have candida problems and so does my son. But it looks like candida and nutritional yeast have nothing to do with each other.

Any thoughts and unput will be greatly appreciated.

Most candida diets say to stay away from yeast including nutritional yeast. However Dr. William Crook, one of the candida syndrome pioneers says in the Yeast Connection that food yeast is biologically incapable of feeding or exacerbating candida, pathogenic yeasts and fungus and yeast overgrowth in general. It only is an issue if you are sensitive to it.

He recommends an elimination diet for a very short period of time (about 3 weeks of lower carb, no yeast, fruit, dairy, gluten, etc) then start trialing things. Unlike other candida diets, he dosn't advocate staying on a restrictive diet for long: add back complex carbs, fruit, some dairy and even yeast if you tolerate them.

I tried a more standard anti-candida diet for a couple of months, eliminating yeast to no avail. Yeast simply does not bother me, the only that does still is dairy.

I like nutritional yeast for the B vitamins and the cheese taste in sauces and such since I am dairy free. I don't eat it on a daily basis though, but I'm not afraid to use it now if I want some

I've read that fermented foods and healthy yeasts can actually help fight candida.

If you think about what antibiotics do to your system, it makes sense that colonizing your gut is a better idea than trying to make it sterile.
