Nursemaid's Elbow? Sprain? Broke? Or Nothing? UPDATE Post 7

DD2 fell off the bed yesterday. I was in the room but didn't see exactly how she fell and how she landed. But apparently she hurt her right arm. Here are some pics. Not the greatest.

It is swollen below and above the elbow. To me it feels more warm to the touch than the left side.

I have a call into the Doc. He is suppose to call back about Noon or so.

Nursemaid's Elbow? Sprain? Broke? The swelling area feels hard to me.

That looks a lot like the swelling from DD's break.

I should add that the urgent care didn't even SEE the break on xray (which is somewhat common for a break in a child). But dd continued to be in pain so her doc referred us to children's where they could identify the location of the break. It wasn't until 3 weeks later, in between casts, that you could really see on the xray the new bone growth and therefore where the break was. I hope that makes sense - I would just be sure to go to someone who knows what they are doing.

Just got off the phone with the Ped. Because of the swelling he is thinking it might be broken. Said to take her to the ER for x-ray.

Hubby gets off work at 2. So we will take her as soon as he gets home.

My son has had nursemaid's elbow at least four times and he's never had any swelling when it happens. He didn't want to use that arm and cried whenever anyone touched it. I'd definitely take her as soon as possible and get it checked out.

Update

Well it's broke just above the elbow. The ER put her in a soft cast and a cute tiny sling. We have the X-rays and need to take her to an Orthopedic Surgeon to have a cast put on.

I will call Gabrielle's Orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow to set up an appointment.

Okay. So how do you keep a sling on a 21 month old? Oh this is going to be fun. NOT!

I hope we can get the real cast tomorrow. She keeps picking at the soft cast. By morning she is going to have this thing taken apart.

DD1 has had nursemaid's elbow twice. So I knew this was not the same once it started swelling.

Hi Mama,
Helpful idea: try to get a babylegs or some other fabric-y thing over the fiberglass cast.... It'll keep it cleaner, and won't scratch you, your LO, and your furniture.
I hope she heals quickly... sounds rough!

Actually last night I was thinking about one of my husband's white socks. That way I can take it off and wash it. This child is such a messy eater too.

I have some babylegs, but I think they won't be big enough.

So sorry! Hope you guys don't have to have the cast for too long! It's kind of inconvenient w/ clothing.

Just wanted to come back and see what the injury was. Sorry to hear it is broken. I don't have any suggestions for how to keep the sling on her, but others had good ideas. I hope she heals quickly.

Today she decided to take the soft cast apart. She got it half way undone before I got to her.

Tomorrow's appointment can't get here fast enough.
