canola oil - Page 2

Whole Foods Market Lover and Canola Oil

I've been aware of the dangers of canola oil for years and have never brought the stuff into my home for cooking with... However, I love getting take-out from Whole Foods a few times a week, and definitely indulge in their bakery items often as well, knowing full well that they use canola oil in EVERYTHING! I'm just curious / fishing for other TF followers' thoughts... Do you think this is okay? I mean, yeah it's better than your typical fast-food take-out (which I haven't partaken in since I was a kid), but I don't even eat from WF because of convenience, but because it's so yummy! So again, just lookin for some opinions. Thanks!

Ok, so I read the post that went over the studies and all the facts on it.

This is my question, where do you find Coconut oil, is there a brand that is not badly/wrongly processed? I looked it up on wikipedia, and it gave a list of different production methods. One used bleaching, one used hydrogenation, one was fractionated that basically didn't give you the whole oil, as parts are of a higher value in other industries. The only one I can find, that I would want to put in my body would be the basic process of pressing/spinning the milk to get the oil to separate. Which brand and where can I find it, uses this method?

I order mine from Tropical Traditions. I usually get the gold label (they have different sales every week or two, so I watch for specials when I know I need more cause it is expensive). I have also ordered from Mountain Rose Herbs. I am not savvy enough to make links...but if you do a search for the sites they'll come up.

hmmm I'll have to look into this. I've used spectrum unrefined because it's the cheapest unrefined. (the refined stuff is 1) refined and 2) doesn't have that lovely coconut smell and taste).

I think it's good to take an 80/20 perspective on things. If you're able to stick with the TF principles 80% of the time I don't think the other 20% is going to make a big difference. There are those for whom it's more like 90/10 and others who stick with it 100%. Everyone's going to have to find their own mix that works best for them.

Most regular posters here would take issue with the nutritional claims just because of the fact that they've been in the flow for awhile. It's sort of one of those TF 101 kinds of things. There are a couple of stickies at the top of this forum that you should read through if you haven't already. You may also want to check into getting a copy of Nina Planck's book "Real Food: What to Eat and Why."

I second the recommendation of Planck's book. It was a fabulous read and really challenged some of my ideas about healthy eating.
