BF and sick baby

My 3 month old has a bit of cough; mostly it is just post nasal drip that he is coughing on - it is clear, not green and he has no fever, so mostly I am not worried. I am just wondering, should he be eating more frequently or less? The first night he had quite a bit of gas and was really, really upset, hence the runny nose and PND, which led to the coughing. He barely ate that night as he was too upset to nurse. He finally nursed long and well around 7 am. and was mostly on his usual routine the rest of the day, but a couple times he nursed less at a time, but more frequently. Last night he slept alot; it was the first time I have ever woken him to nurse; it had been probably 7 or 8 hours. He nursed really well and went back to sleep and I woke him again 3 hours later to nurse before I came into work.

I know when I am sick, I usually have less of an appetite, but didn't know if that held true for babies or not? I figure he'll probably be really hungry once he is on the mend.

(FWIW; we've got the cool mist humidifier going; DH is using the bulb suction thing 3-4 times a day, and I put just a little vicks on his chest, and he had a good warm bath last night - any other ideas would be welcome)

- TIA

that's so hard! You can try nursing him in an upright position - easier to breath and nurse at the same time (like sitting facing you rather than lying on your lap), and also nursing in a bathroom with the shower going for steam, or in a bath may help too.

If baby is not nursing well and not making 6 heavy wet pee diapers in 24 hours, then pumping your milk and feeding by spoon or cup will help to keep him hydrated and also help to keep up your supply. Cup feeding is not as difficult as it sounds, here is a good video: http://www.nbci.ca/index.php?option=...lips&Itemid=13 (takes a while to load).

Hope he feels better soon!

ETA: just realized that you are at work, so is baby taking a bottle during the day while you are away? You are probably pumping anyway! You may have to work to get baby interested in nursing lots again when he's feeling better, as sometimes colds are a reason for a nursing strike, but hopefully with the humidifier and a change in nursing positions he'll be nursing up a storm soon!

thanks! he is feeling lots better - still coughing - but happy again and he nursing LOTS; every 3 hours even at night and he used to have a nice (for mama!) 6 hour stretch of sleep. I think too, he might be going through a growth spurt . . .

I am a short mama - 4'10" or so and haven't figured out logistically how one nurses upright when sitting? I might have to stand up to manage that, or just sit really straight . . .normally I kind of recline, especially at night. doesn't have that esp. nursing, I am large chested.

Thanks again for the response!

My DS is a lot older but he was just sick a week or two ago... As soon as he was feeling better he started nursing like CRAZY!! Like a growth spurt. So I don't know if it WAS a growth spurt or maybe that's just what they do after they've been sick, maybe they try to make up for it?? Glad your LO is feeling better!
