Hi all,
I'm wanting to make some grow lights for my seedlings. Does anyone know thw wattage I need for each florescent bulb?

Thanks!

I use the ones that are rated as "daylight". I got a plain old shop light (the kind that is white & holds two tubes on chains) for like $8 and two daylight bulbs to go in it. It works great.

I also use shoplights. Wattage depends on the number of bulbs and their length. A standard 4' long T12 tube draws approximately 40 watts. I use 4 tubes (2 shoplight fixtures) to light my 2' x 4' bench. So I'm using 160W.

The color of the bulb for growing is much debated, most folks mix two different colors. I have two "daylight" and two "sunshine" (even cooler than daylight) bulbs. From reddest to bluest, the colors are:
warm white - cool white - daylight - sunshine

A lot of folks mix a cool white and a warm white, or 3 cool white and 1 warm white.... I'm not convinced it makes much difference either way. The bulbs all cost the same and are all available at Lowes, so I didn't get too hung up about it.
