I missed it last night and thankfully was able to catch it on mtv.com today. This show shows a lot of tough situations but I think it is for the greater good that young people can get a glimpse of what parenthood *could* look like if they weren't ready; however, (BIG however), my only complaint is that they never show how wonderful it could be when young people make good decisions. I guess Caitlynn and Tyler did what was best for them...but what about the single moms who make it work, are responsible, etc? I was a teen mom and made it work. It irks me that many of these young moms are selfish, mean, and just plain irresponsible..yet, I know that is a concern. However, b/c of stereotypes like that, I had a difficult entry to motherhood when other people wanted to judge me simply on age. Thank god I found LLL and midwifery --- that really empowered me. Many young women aren't so lucky though. The show is hard to watch, but it is food for thought.

I love that show.
I think last season Maci was doing a great job. Her relationship was volatile and sad (and reminds me of my own, unfortunately) but as far as mothering Bentley she was great about it. I'll have to catch the new season on MTV.com! |
p.s. -- you may want to catch the episode soon, because last season they took them down at one point, to increase actual tv viewership, I guess...but that was frustrating to have to WAIT to see the episodes I missed! I need to remember to set my tivo...but in many ways it is just easier to watch in mhy room on my laptop. I don't really want my little ones watchng this show due to a lot of the tough issues they aren't ready for, iykwim.

I think they leave the episodes up for a week, then take them down for a month or so before putting them up again. I'm not totally sure why it works that way, but other shows are like that too.
I would bet that they don't show the moms that make it work because it wouldn't be as good of TV without all the drama! I think MTV also gets a good bit of criticism for "glorifying" teen parenthood with the show, so I think they'd have a tough time showing a teen mom & her partner who made everything work and lived happily ever after. I think it would be nice to see a mom that make it work, but I can see the reasons why they'd choose to show more dysfunctional moms too...

The new girl they profiled really made me sad. She truly had no idea what it was to be a mother and was just completely not prepared for the responsibility it took. To make matters worse, her mother kept trying "help" by telling her constantly what she was doing wrong but it just ended up making things worse. It sucks because IME that's not the norm for most teenage mothers. The girls from last season seemed much better prepared to be mothers, even Farrah with her partying.

The thing that really PEEVED me with this episode was the fact that they kept refering the baby as an it, instead of acknowledging that he is a baby with a name, also the fact that she was so out of touch with reality and made it seem like her and the boyfriend would be together forever.

I actually felt really bad for the girl. She was clearly completely unprepared for motherhood and the adult role that it is. It seems like the parents of the teen moms expect them to suddenly be able to mature to the level that a parent needs to be at overnight. And if not or they behave like the children they are, then they get into screaming matches with them.

I am watching the episode online now. I am only halfway through so I can't comment yet on the whole thing. But I am very happy to see that she is breastfeeding! I saw a lot of bottle feeding on last season so this made me happy

Okay, so I finished the episode. It was very sad to me that they were talking about the child like he was a family pet that wasn't working out and needed to be rehomed
So sad
When the Grandmother asked if they should find a family "to take care of it".
Ugh.
And I found it interesting that her two friends tried to gently suggest ways for her to be a better Mom. That was awesome, what insightful young women they were
I hope it all works out for the family. It seems that the Grandmother and her boyfriend can provide the care the child needs. It has to be hard to be a teen Mom, though, I can't imagine. Hopefully she can get the support she needs
