Would you do this? - Page 2

Well, if it's anything like it used to be, she WON'T pay anywhere near what she owes on her ccs.

When dh and I got married he had 3 or 4 ccs that he had long ago stopped paying on, each with ~1000 balance. When we wanted to buy a house, we had to deal with it, and we ended up settling with the collections companies they had sold to. We paid about $1k total. I pointed out to dh MANY times that he had basically stolen the things he had purchased with the ccs, and he agreed. Anyway, this was years ago so I guess things might have changed, but still.

As far as the original question, I don't know if I would do that or not. Severe depression can be awfully debilitating, and you have to make health a priority, yk?

She can't stop paying them really though. She can stop for a while but the debt will continue to grow and eventually she will pay, one way or another, for those CC's.
only if they can garnish her wages. Usually they will sell the debt to a collections agency after awhile but when the statute of limitations runs out on the debt they can't legally collect on the debt anymore ie if you don't want to pay they can't make you. Although they will still try to harass you.

This. The only way she can be forced to pay is if they actually take her to court and get a judgement against her, and honestly, few companies bother to do that because of the expense involved and the low chance of getting anything back. It's still not a choice I would willingly make, especially since we've been dealing with creditors for over a year from being unemployed not by choice!

Sounds like she didn't have much of a choice, so whether I would make that choice or not is irrelevant. The information we know is hearsay and possibly incomplete, and I wouldn't feel comfortable judging this person's decision right here, right now.
