Note taking skills

I was wondering if anyone had some good links for teaching note taking skills. Specifically late elementary early middle school age.

I am curious about developing this too. In the future--not so much now. I, never did well with notes. I learned better by just absorbing the lecture and using the textbook. Whenever I tried to take notes, it threw me off. People liked my notes, so I guess I did take "good notes", but I just don't learn best that way. However, the way I hs will never lead to taking lecture notes. So, how do I go about teaching this? My dd may learn well from notetaking and it is often helpful to people in college classes.

On the other hand, notes from reading, we have been developing since 2nd grade.

Yeah, I don't lecture either, it's the textbook notetaking that I'm trying to teach. It's one of those things that are instinctual to me, I can do it by habit without really thinking about it. Just not really sure about teaching it.

Ok, well then to start--I made a photocopy of a sample page and asked my dd to highlight what she thought was the MOST important or helpful information. Then, we went over it. She learned pretty quickly that it isn't helpful to highlight the entire page From there we have learned about different ways to take the notes (highlighting only works some of the time!). I am hoping that she eventually finds a method that 'clicks' for her. We have covered outlining as a tool and using 3x5 cards. Right now, she likes the 3x5 card way.

I would love to hear how others do it though!
