A(nother) Critique My Stash Thread

Hi Ladies,
I'm hoping some of you with experience might be able to help me decide if this stash will serve me well, or just be a jumbled mess....!

My hope is to use fitteds and some PFs with and w/o covers for NB and Small stages, then move to a combo of mostly pockets, but still use some fitteds and PFs for Medium and up. I hope to wash every other day, but might skip an additional day in NB stage.

This is what I either have already, or have in mindto acquire:

20 NB Fitteds (4 ThirstiesXS fab fitted the rest home made- 8 done)
8 NB Covers - have 6 various from Freecycle
1 NB wool cover
10-12 size S Fitteds - 3 BG Bamboo the rest home made
8 Small Covers have 6 various from DSwap and others
12 Under the Nile Small PFs (11x14) - already have 8
[COLOR="royalblue"6 Baby Kicks Hemp PFs size S[/COLOR] already have 3
10-12 size M Fitteds - 3 BG Bamboo the rest home made
6 BK Hemp PF sz M thought these would be good for nights and doublers too.
12 UTN PFs 14x18 (or whatever their large size is)
8 Thirsties Duo Wrap size 2
2 M wool covers

16 assorted OS pockets with MF inserts, all converted to snaps

3 snappis
2 diaper pail liners
2 travel wet bags
10 diaper pins
... anyone know a place to get good ones that are not $1 each?!

I'm also planning to have some random fleece stay dry liners (home made), and lots of extra inserts/stuffers of extras from the diaper sewing and/or microfiber topped in something soft.

Also might try to make some fleece pull-on soakers

Thoughts? Am I going overboard? I wanted to have a mix of PFs and pockets, depending on baby's mood, my mood, baby's bottom situation, and whether we'll be traveling or just at home. Also, thought the hemp and UTNs would be good for nights since they're supposed to be pretty absorbant.

Since I hope to have the Duo covers from size M to PL, I wanted to have a few more in the rotation.... is that OK?

What am I missing?

Thanks for any feedback you can offer.

I think it is fine, but if you reorganize and put similar sizes together, it would help me figure it out.

Your 12 Bumgenius pockets are onesize, right?

Here's My newborn stash if you want to take a look..

Yes, BG are one size. I'll probably use them whenever babe outgrows size S.

I was thinking about organizing based on size... now I will.

looks great!

I've found that I like different diapers at different times. Good to have variety.

I LOVE Babykicks prefolds. They are so soft & much more absorbant than regular prefolds!

you have wipes, snappis, pins & wet bags too right?

I have found that I can't get a snappi to stay put in the bk pfs, so I have to pin them. I keep the pins in a bar of soap when I'm not using them.

Oh- right! I forgot to add those, but I have 4 thirsties wet bags on my registry- 2 can liners and 2 "duffles" that are also draw string and supposedly sized for travel. I might splurge and get a planet wise travel wet bag though- a zippered one would be nice, and I dont know how to sew zippers.

Also in my mental list:
3 snappis
box of diaper pins
wipes- making lots myself with flannel/bamboo velour and will supplement with purchased when i get sick of sewing them! (I have about 8 wipes now. I figure I need like... ooooh 100 to use as bottom/face/hand/travel cloths and still only wash every other day.)

only thing I saw missing was wipes.

If I were you, I would buy 1 or 2 aios in sz S and sz M for outings---bumgenius are good, some people like thirsties and I love motherease.

We always stuck bumkins aios in our diaper bag since they are really trim, they only took up slightly more space than a sposie.

Erinjvrn and Pinoikoi- do you think that small and medium pockets would work for this in place of AIOs? I have lots of yardage of PUL and bamboo velour, suede cloth, birdseye, MF, and fleece in various fibre content.... I have patterns and could (I think) easily make something. I understand the sized AIO or AI2 would probably be much easier to use on the go...! I guess I could make a few AIOs, but my concern with those was drying time.

Oh yeah, pockets would definitely work! I don't have much knowledge of patterns, though so I have nothing to recommend for you on that one.

I have a few patterns, so I'm not worried about that part. I just want to make sure that I'm not going to spend all this time and "waste' the material, only to have yet another puffy dipe in the bag!

I would obviously pre-stuff the pockets, and probably leave them in the bag, then rotate into the regular stash if not used for a while.

Still worried that I wont have enough for the NB stage, and guess I will just sew like crazy till I run out of fabric!

*** ETA: and how soon is too soon to start prepping? I can't wait to get my new BKs and UTNs all fluffy and absorbant!!!

Prefolds usually take several washes. Other diapers don't require that much. I haven't really prewashed my dipes yet for the new baby (but very few of them are new, so not as necessary)..

In my family, we line the baby's drawers with wrapping paper received at the baby shower.. since the dresser is brand new there is a little bit of sawdust in it every time I open it (and they are, as yet, unlined)..

So once I have a baby shower and get the drawers lined, I will freshen up my stash.. but probably not before then. I would just have to rewash them anyway.

20 fitteds+12 UTN PFs+9 BK PFs = 41 dipes for the NB stage... how many do you really think you'll need? That should easily get you washing every 3rd day.

I will say I LOVE the UTN PFs, we're still using the small ones at 5 mos. He can't pee through them like he does the regular PFs. There is a HUGE size diff between the small & lg ones though. The lg one is like a skirt on him, so it's sitting unused for now. I use the small ones as stuffers for his tie nappies, and those suckers hold a TON.

Pinoikoi- what a wonderful tradition! I know in *reality* i have plenty of time... I'm just looking for fluff related projects so I can procrastinate on all the other organizing that needs to be done around here

Yes you're right; I guess I didnt think of it with a total that way- thanks! I was thinking the PFs would be more like occasional use things, and mostly used as stuffers/doublers for pockets, and the fitteds would be my go to dipes. I agree- the UTN larges are HUGE!!! but the smalls look SO tiny! They're only 11" w or something before washing...

I hear you.. I have several closets that need to be sorted through, but I would rather order pink sparkly things..

It IS a cool tradition.. actually I was surprised it isn't more common.. my mother told me at my first baby shower that I had to save the paper for that purpose so I did.. My oldest is 11 now, and he still has blue sheep, blue plaid, and blue baby feet in his drawers.. it amazes me that they have lasted this long.. I would think they would have ended up torn up by now since I just folded the paper and laid them in there (no sealing the paper or anything).. and he has opened his drawers, jammed his clothes in there, and tried to shove them shut many many times since.

They barely meet at the hips anymore on my skinny 5 mo, which is why they're being used as stuffers... but the rise is still perfect. But as a NB, I used the angel wing fold, and had to fold the front down a bit to fit him properly... so they do fit a NB.

Thanks cristeen! I was so nervous that I'd just spent (what I consider) a fortune on these soft as butter prefolds, only to not be able to use them!
Glad to hear the AW fold works, thats the one I seem lean toward. (or, in fantasy changing CDs land I do at least!)
