Is Vegan a Dirty Word?

I'm joking about the dirty word part, but I do see quite a few people post it as veg*n and I don't know why. Anyone want to appease my curiosity?

Posting it as "veg*n" is intended to include both vegetarians and vegans.

The dirty word part drove me to take a look at this thread. As I know I have used that word on here .. I think. Now I know you were joking.
