Iron bacteria in toilet tank

Does anyone have a good (green) way of dealing with this? Our toilet tanks are black with the stuff, and it turns the toilet bowl grey and just generally is yucky. Every once in a while I have to go in with bleach, which I don't like to use for obvious reasons!!

We have this, too. We live on a well, and the water is so full of iron.

I used to use the Clorox bleach tabs that you just drop in the tank. Those helped a lot. I know, not very green, and I don't use them anymore because I have little ones.

I will be watching this thread for more information... hope there is another solution out there!

I have no experience with what you describe, but tea tree oil does wonders in the toilet! It will keep a toilet white for a week if you put it in a few drops when you use the brush and let it soak for a few minutes (like 45). Maybe putting a few drops n the tank everyday would help? It is a natural anti-bacterial.

Hmmm. But it would just get flushed away...unless a tiny bit of residue would be enough to keep it at bay. I'll give it a try, though...you never know. Somebody needs to invent a "puck" of sorts, made of friendly stuff, that you could throw in the tank maybe every week or so. Any one up for it?
