When is "old enough" for Harry Potter? - Page 2

We are in the "watch the movies after you can read the books" camp with this one, so my daughter just turned 7 last month, and is reading book #6 and has watched the movies up to #5, and is totally into it. We do check in to make sure that she's comfortable with the various violence, etc., but she blows off our concerns: "oh, that's just a deatheater" I think having the full world picture of the books in her head makes the movies less alarming than thay otherwise would be.

DD is 5, and LOVES Harry Potter. We watch all the movies. Now, the later ones get a tad scary, but the first couple are really meant for kids. Heck, ds is 2, and is "in the room" when we watch them...as dd has been since she was born, basically. I dont find anythign about the HP movies to be too scary or whatever, unless your particular kid is extremely sensitive. But, we don't censor much at all here. I mean..ya, like, porn and stuff, LOL, but the kids watch all sorts of stuff with us. We just spent the last several weeks watch ign the entire series of "Bones" on DVD, and the 2 and 5 yo LOVE it..they dance to the theme song and the 5 yo loves the mystery of it....

My DD is 5 and would be way too scary...

In my mind there is a world of great books and movies that are more age and temperment appropriate for my kids and eventually they will love the Harry Potter books/movies.

For a great series of books of the fantastical variety and great for 5yo who are easily scared, the Moomintroll series by Tove Jansson are great.

I thought you were asking about the books!

But, I would show the first movie around age 7 or 8 depending on the child. It's kind of scary in parts, isn't it?
