Which birth ball? ~ Got one! :D

Cause I have only just realised they come in different sizes!!!

I am 5'4 by the way - but I have a longer upper body. These things don't come blown up so I can't exactly try it out before I buy!

I had no idea, so I went with the biggest one (75cm) on Amazon. I'm 5'3 but I thought I might use it as a "chair" beforehand as well as in labor, so I wanted it to be tall enough. I actually don't think I inflated mine enough so the smaller ones might have been just fine, but I'm going to try pumping it up some more. It's great to sit on even at my height, it's not like it's too high to get my bum onto it or anything (which is the only problem I can think of happening with a bigger ball vs a smaller ball?). I was worried that I'd feel like I was sinking down too close to the floor with a small one.

this is the kind of thing that helped me decide (it's from this site):

Determining what size exercise ball to get

You know what ball you want...but what size?

There are several approaches to sizing exercise balls:

The 90-degree rule: When you are seated on the ball, feet flat on the floor, you want your hips and knees to form a 90 degree angle with one another.

Height: Match the ball to your height - the taller you are, the bigger the exercise ball. Here are some loose guidelines:
Exercise ball sizing
Ball Size User Height
55 cm (21") 4" 11" to 5' 3"
65 cm (25") 5' 4" to 5' 10"
75 cm (29") 5' 11" and up

Sizes based upon height are approximate. If you are near a division (for instance, you stand between 5' 2" and 5' 5" tall) you could opt to go either way. Consider your other body characteristics and how you plan to use the ball.

If you are 5' 3" and weigh 240 pounds, you probably ought to go with a 65 cm ball. On the other hand, if you are 5' 5", but have very short legs, you might prefer a 55 cm ball. Similarly, if you intend to exercise while standing or lying on your back, the smaller ball would work better.

Still undecided? When in doubt, it is safer to choose the larger size. You always have the option of inflating the ball less. Five foot three using a 65 cm ball? No sweat, just fit the exercise ball using the 90 degree rule in sitting. An under-inflated ball will not be as firm, but it will function just fine.

also, i agree with ishyfishie about how much it's inflated. i use mine as my desk chair, and i have to put more air in it from time to time. i find i like it blown up all the way AND with less air too. i got the 65 cm (i'm 5' 7.5') size, but the 90 degree angle is something i only really get when it's on the deflated end of comfortable.

You ladies are so helpful! - Thanks so much for your replies!...Now to send dh out to buy me one hehe! (cause I am wanting to swap this chair for it as well!)

Since dd1 rolled the ball closer to me, I'll also say that my 75cm ball at not-full capacity is about the same height as my computer chair at its lowest setting--but when I sit on the ball, it's a few inches lower than the chair and my knees are not quite at a 90 degree angle. I'll have to pump some more air into it tonight to at least reach the 90 degree angle. All the instructions say not to over-inflate because then you risk bursting it, but it also came with a "measuring tape" to inflate it to fit the tape and my ball is nowhere near that tape, I can't imagine how it could inflate that much more! Maybe I'll make dh pump it the rest of the way, then I don't have to be responsible for it bursting, lol.

I am 5'3" with longer legs and a short torso. I have kidlets that like to hang out posterior, and I find it easier to have hips higher than knees on my 65 cm ball. If you look at spinningbabies' site, for working on fetal positioning that's what they recommend (knees lower than hips).
I can get my hips higher than knees on my 55cm ball, but it doesn't last long because with just a small loss of air, I start to find my hips are too low. I use my 55cm ball slightly deflated to drape my upper body and torso over while kneeling to work on positioning.

Well I have my birthing ball and went for 65cm. It is perfect! Fully blown up I can get my legs lower than bump - it is about the same height as the computer chair fully blown up as well. Perfect for 'now' I think - 32 weeks pregnant. I have put something between the computer dest and the ball to stop it rolling forward and then I can do all sorts on the ball as I please! lol...

Let a bit of air out and it so loverly and squishy and nice to sit on - with my legs at a 90 degree angle...I think that will be perfect for when I am in labour! I was sitting on it and thinking 'yeah -this will be a great help and comfort for when I am in labour!'...

and it only cost me ÂŁ6.99!!! lol (its a 'fitness' ball - with a max weight nearly twice as much as I currently weight so thats great!)
