So I found a midwife that is willing to deliver the twins at home. I am meeting with her on Monday for the first time. My DH is very nervous about having the twins at home since problems can arise, mostly for Baby B, unexpectedly. He is a huge supporter of home birth for singleton pregnancies (and we have had a home birth before) but the twins make him a little nervous understandably. Anyway he will be with me at this meeting which is more of a consultation than a regular prenatal appointment. We want to make sure we feel comfortable with her skill level to safely deliver and deal with any problems that may arise. What questions specifically related to the twins birth should I make sure to ask? I never really had to interview my previous midwife because she was a family friend so it was a no brainier. And with the OB I knew to look for someone who would "allow" a vaginal birth but I'm not sure exactly when it comes to home birth with twins.
Here's a few questions my DH & I have thought of...
-What is her back up plan if babies come earlier than she allows for home birth?
-How early will she deliver them at home?
-How will she know if Baby B has flipped into a non favorable position for delivery after Baby A is born?
-Has she ever had to deal with a prolapsed cord from Baby B (both babies have a ton of fluid on top of it)? If so how will she handle that?
-How will she deal with it if the placenta separates before baby B is born. (their placentas are fused into one)
-Up until this point (27 wks) we have been unable to get Baby B's heartbeat with a hand held Doppler due to the position of the placentas (my previous midwife & current Ob have tried). My Ob has to use an u/s every time to check her heart rate. How will the midwife deal with this since she doesn't have a u/s machine readily available?
-Also the closest hospital that has a NICU is 40 minutes away with no traffic. If that too far in case of a true emergency? We have a hospital about 15 mintues away but they don't take babies before 36 weeks and have a very small labor/ delivery ward. They don't have doctors on the floor at all times. So someone would have to be called if there was an emergency.
Anything we should ask? TIA!
