'big boy' at one year old

Disclaimer: I'm really starting to hate my facebook account, lol.

I'm friends with several girls from high school via facebook. I met up with one (M) at a Leche meeting many months ago, when she was having difficulty with her nursing relationship due to a breast surgery. Since then I've been kind of a cheerleader for her, she has called me with questions and freak-outs, etc.

She recently posted that her ds (just shy of one year old) hasn't nursed in the past two days and she's more upset about it than he appears to be. I wrote a little blip about how proud I am that she made it so far, etc. She's had so much to overcome and still wasn't able to nurse exclusively like she wanted to.

A mutual friend of ours (A) wrote on M's wall about how M's ds is a 'big boy' now and he doesn't 'want to be on mommy's breast forever'. So I commented on that, 'I'm still nursing at 2, uh-oh!'

I guess my point just being...that we are all the same age and from similar backgrounds, but it's so sad that a baby at one year old is a big boy and doesn't need his mommy's comfort anymore. One year of nursing is hardly forever, kwim?

Just.... *sigh*

Awww... sounds like baby is on a nursing strike! Your friend may like some info on how to get through nursing strikes. Kellymom is great: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/...to-breast.html

So many mothers don't know about nursing strikes and assume that baby has weaned. Weaning doesn't occur abruptly, so the more moms who know about strikes the better!

I did suggest to her that it's a strike. I told her to keep an open mind and keep offering for the next week or better. Thank you though for the information!!

I'm with you on hating FB lately

At 1 yr old he's still a BABY!! I don't care if he's walking and talking- he's still got quite a ways to go before he's really a "big boy"!

Wild guess, your friend doesn't co-sleep and/or has night weaned already?

Anyway remind her that if, heaven forfend, he gets sick he'll start nursing again and she'll avoid a trip to the er for dehydration.

I agree with Sapphire - Riley went through a phase (and she was a BOOBIE monster - like she still nurses like a newborn at19mo) where she was just too busy during the day at around 12-13mo and would make up her nursing during the night.

I would highly recommend her cosleeping or offering as much as possible during the day.
