I was giving him sippy with little amounts of breastmilk but that all came up too. the water he was actually keeping down. I just feel like a monster not nursing him. this has been going on for awhile and he is moderately dehydrated so now I just want anything to stay in him. sorry. lacking sleep and brain power. help?

I would say keep nursing and then offer sips of water in between nursings to help with the hydration. Or, will he still throw it up if it's followed by a little water?
Is he throwing it up instantly? If not, then he's probably getting some nutrition from it and the immune factors should help him if he's keeping any quantity of it down.

The breastmilk is absorbed much faster than water, so even if it doesn't stay down for as long he'll likely get more hydration from it than from the same volume of water. How often is he throwing up? And how long after nursing? Remember that if any baby gets lethargic and isn't making good pees then a call to your doc - or urgent care or public health or whatever you emergency medical contact is - is good idea.
Hope it is over soon!

There should be an urgent forum somewhere on here for when people really need some help
|
When my DS had stomach flu as a baby, we did kind of a gastrointestinal rest, during which we gave him breast milk in a bottle so we could control the quantity and make sure he didn't get too much at once. I think we gave him about half an ounce at a time - half ounce, wait a while, if he seems hungry give him another half ounce. I agree with the PPs who have pointed out that if breast milk stays down for any amount of time, he's getting some benefit from it, and I doubt that it's ALL coming back up. Spit up can spread like crazy and look really dramatic, but it's usually not actually that much. Measure an ounce of water and pour it out on your kitchen floor sometime - you might be surprised how far it goes.

You have all my sympathy, but I think that forum doesn't exist because if it's urgent like that, you really need to call your pediatrician.

we went to see the doctor. our usual ped doesn't work today so we saw a different doctor who yelled at me for nursing him saying that milk was the absolute worst thing to give him. it irked me but i just let it slide. he has to pee in four hours or we're supposed to go to the er. he is nursing now.

s Having a sick baby is so hard! Baby may need more aggressive rehydration (IV) - it's really great that you are being so vigilant. Hang in there, you guys will get through this!
There is some decent evidence for breastmilk as rehydration fluid. A study from Bangladesh showed "withdrawal of breast feeding during diarrhoea was associated with a five times higher risk of dehydration compared with continuation of breast feeding during diarrhoea at home."

Here is some advice from the Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto, Canada: http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/Health...ategoryID=AZ1d
and kellymom: http://www.kellymom.com/health/illne....html#vomiting
Moderate dehydration is nothing to laugh about - I'll be sending you both positive vibes tonight.

Thinking of you!! They'll take good care of your babe in the hospital, and don't be shy about still trying to BF even though he's got an IV. It'll be good for both of you, even if it's just comforting. Our city children's hospital is fabulously supportive of BF (they even gave me meal vouchers as a BFing mom!)
Hope your sweet one gets better soon!!
Edited to add: Mine was in for less than a day after we thought he had a seizure (turned out to be scared parents overreacting). Anyhow. They gave him precautionary antibiotics (bleh) and I wanted to give you a heads up that mine had a few days of strange poops after that.
