When we refinanced our home a number of years ago, we were required to put $3000 into an escrow account to finish home repairs that we were in the middle of. We only spent part of that money, which had to be accessed through and approved by the loan department at the bank. They never came to check to see that the repairs were done, and we weren't sure how picky they were going to be about it if they did, so we left that money in the escrow account in case they came back and said we needed to do more work.
Well, we forgot about it. And we refinanced again earlier this year. About a month ago, I opened a new savings account and got a printout of all our accounts - and there it was. But we assumed we would still need to get approval to withdraw the money, as that was how the account was set up, so we thought we would just use it bit by bit for home improvement. I finally got around to calling to ask what the process is for accessing that money, and the bank told me that they would release it all to us immediately as that loan had been closed out. And they did - within two hours it was in my checking account.
Things are even tighter than usual for us right now, and we have some outstanding expenses related to kids activities and some money we owe my parents. Today I will pay for all those things and buy groceries, which I have been putting off. DH is going to pay some late bills, and the rest is destined for the emergency fund, which has gotten alarmingly low.
I cannot believe the good timing of this. I never expected it and never even thought to wish for it because I would never have imagined it possible. It's really just exactly what I needed to get the stress off my shoulders.
I hope others have the same kind of good timing with unexpected funds!
