meemee, I can't speak for the OP, but my kids prefer kids' music. A lot of the kids' music that's been produced in the last 10 yrs or so is really listenable for grown-ups, too. The themes are more interesting for kids, though. It's not all about romantic love (ewwwww! kissing!) but has more interesting themes like losing your tooth, or getting a new bike, or green bananas!
Musically, it's not as dark as a lot of the music DH prefers (he leans toward alt-country/americana) and the kids' music has a happier sound. Granted there is happier sounding grown-up music (especially zydeco and cajun), but the kids' music is also a little more straight forward. It's not too crazy. A lot of it, like Dan Zanes' stuff, is really just folk music.
We do listen to some Beatles (what kid doesn't love Yellow Submarine?!), but I don't need 'em singing along with "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"...
We do a mix of both, but I think kids' music is totally appropriate just the same way that picture books and kids' chapter books are. The themes are more interesting and sometimes it's at a more appropriate level. There is some grown up writing that's appropriate for kids (like some stories in National Geographic), but there's some that's not so appealing or appropriate.
I just wanted to also say that kids' music today is not, by and large, saccharine and syrupy drivel. It's being written by many, many rock and pop musicians like They Might Be Giants, Lisa Loeb, The Asylum Street Spankers, the Bare Naked Ladies, Dan Zanes, Ralph Covert, Peter Himmelman, etc, etc, etc. It's very listenable for grown-ups, too.
There's a great kids' music blog called "zooglobble". You can find reviews of all kinds of great music for kids there.
