Almost 9 months, was STTN, now wants to party

For the past couple of nights, DS has been waking up around 4:30am wide awake and wanting to play. He is wearing us OUT. He's up for a couple of hours before he crashes again.
We were doing so well!! He was sleeping about 12 hours at night, waking up about twice to nurse. Totally do-able. Now this.
He does seem to be putting on some major weight right now, although I haven't had him weighed lately. Is this a growth spurt? Or maybe he's just too excited with life to sleep?
So what do you think? Is this a normal phase for an (almost) 9 month old? Is it over soon? Cause I'm really sleepy!

I think 9 months is the most consistently talked about sleeping regression time I've noticed here on the FBNP area

This too shall pass...

This is exactly what is happening with us! It's the reason I'm up right now........

That would be about the age both my boys stopped sleeping 12 hours or so straight. Neither slept through again regularly until they were two. Frustrating but a fact of life!

HUGS!

My DD did this whenever she was learning a new skill (learning to crawl, stand, walk, etc). DH and I handled it by playing dead. If we stayed still and didn't move a muscle, DD would often get bored and resettle herself after 15 minutes or so. If we engaged her at all, tried to resettle her, etc. she was awake for 2-3 hours.
