It seems the time has come, again, to think seriously about this. DS (6, ASD, SPD) has had many, many episodes of strep/tonsilitis in his 6 years. More than I can remember, starting when he was just a little baby. In addition, he always has enlarged tonsils (that's just normal for him). He snores LOUD at night. I would place money on him having sleep apnea too (he also has a deviated septum so I'm sure that doesn't help).
We just got over yet another episode of strep (landed him in the ER Sunday morning because the lymph nodes in his neck were so swollen he couldn't move his neck). His tonsils were so swollen they were touching and left barely any room for air to get down his throat. And another shot of antibiotics to add to his loooong list of times he's had to do that (he won't take oral meds so injections are our only option).
Which brings me to one of my biggest worries.... recovery from surgery. He will not take meds. We've tried everything. Every flavor we can think of. Nothing works. How would we get pain meds in him? He'll obviously be in some pain afterwards, but I don't see how we would possibly get any tylenol in him?? He's had ear tubes put in, but didn't have any pain meds after that (and did fine). He also had an accident where he got stitches in his genital area but did great after that and didn't have any pain meds (and never complained of pain). But this is different. I can't imagine him doing okay without any pain meds.
Second concern would be getting him to drink something afterwards. He already has such a limited variety of foods/drinks and I fear if we have this surgery he's going to protest and not even drink anything (even water). This is what happened to my sisters son (who also has ASD) after his tonsillectomy and he ended back up in the hospital.
Any thoughts/advice? I'm also thinking I may ask if they will put another tube in one of his ears. It fell out last year but has constantly been filled with fluid since then. As long as he's in surgery, why not hit everything possible- right?
Anybody have any advice/thoughts? DS will see his pediatrician the first week of March (to see if the Nasonex has been helping) and then we'll go to the ENT (and the allergist).
