How much is your newborn sleeping?

I'm not usually the neurotic type - but DF has put the thought in my head that something's not right and now I can't shake it....

Saffie is a week old today, and I would say that in the last 32 hours, she's been awake 3 times for 5 minutes. And ALL the rest of the time she's been asleep, or nursing with her eyes closed.

I know there are spectrums, and all babies are different - but I just wondered, how is your newborn sleeping? Do I have cause for concern?

PS she is feeding just fine. Was 3340grams born, and 3300 on day 5 so the midwife was very happy with that as had expected her to lose c.300 grams, not just 40.

My LO seems to be more awake in the past day than any other time. My ped stated that there would likely be a marked change in her awake levels once she gained back her birthweight, so being that your LO is on her way I wouldn't stress about it. I would guess that she isn't accually sleeping during nursing, but just has her eyes closed.

If she's nursing pleanty, putting out lots of soiled diapers I would just let her sleep! Lord knows it bound to change!

Think about it...baby spent 9 months +/- in near darkness. Now she's out in the big, bright world and it can be overwhelming. I bet if you nursed in a darker room or took her into a more shaded place when she is awake she might stay "awake" (ie. eyes open) longer.

Tristyn is at the same point though. She stays awake for short little spans of time (although the other night it was 4 hours!!!) but most of the time is sleeping or eyes closed.

Tanner is 4 weeks now (!) and has 2 or 3 wakeful periods a day - one in the morning and evening and sometimes one in between that. They each last about 2 hours. The rest of the time he is sweetly sleeping...

Kaya is almost 3 weeks old & has short periods of being very alert/awake but then lots of sleeping. Agree with pps-if you are getting lots of wet/soiled diapers & there is weight gain...no worries.

Yeah, agreed. It seems to vary a lot day to day. August is 13 days old and the other day (day 11 I think?) it seemed like he slept pretty much ALL day except to eat and I was getting a little worried that he'd be up all night - but the night was normal (up for 1.5-2 hours straight sometime during the night). The next day it seemed like he was up a lot more during the day, but with the same awake period at night. I think it varies a lot baby to baby but as long as the diaper thing is cool and they're eating (and not jaundiced, etc) then anything goes.

When the girls first came home, they were awake enough to eat every 3 hours, and then promptly were out. Now they will stay awake a bit longer, particularly in the evening. But they are 9 weeks (adjusted 1 week) old now.

I agree...so long as she's nursing and having wet/soiled diapers I'd just roll with it...and actually am...our Tucker is sleeping a TON...I'm just thankful and sleeping as much as I can with him! As someone else said, you know it will change soon enough!
