Fantastic book advocating the importance of homemakers

I am reading this book and it is awesome. The author has a Cornell Ph.D. in Sociology, I believe, and has thoroughly researched her subject. I thought that many of you would be interested in the history of how homemaking became marginalized in our society/economy and how the lack of "home" has impacted our lives.

This is not referring to homemakers who merely consume and chauffeur, but homemakers who develop skills and make their homes units of production. True, old-fashioned self-reliance without the need to invite corporate values and products into the home. I am REALLY enjoying this and thought many of you would as well.

It is called "Radical Homemakers: Reclaiming Domesticity From A Consumer Culture" by Shannon Hayes. I got it on Amazon but you can also read about it on the author's website

Sooo good, I can't stop reading!

I am intrigued too! I gave up a career after 7 years of university and am home with my dd and really look for inspiration in this department. I LOVE being at home with my child(ren) and can not imagine being separated from her, but it is a marginalized concept in our society.
Thanks for sharing this.

Bumping this up to try to catch a few more readers of this book. I just finished, it's very inspiring. I've been living many aspects of this lifestyle for a long time, but to read about others doing it, and to have many of my reasons for the choices I've made articulated in a book is satisfying. It's also lending me some focus to further my family's home-centered and anti-consumerist choices. I really appreciate the aspect of reconciling "homemaking" with feminism, and separating it from the cliches of patriarchal society.

I am about 1/2 done this book - it is amazing! So validating. I'm going to try and get some other people local to me to read it so I can have a book club!!

I posted on a thread about this book in the SAHM forum.

"I read it the other day and found it boring. There wasn't anything really new in it for me.

If you need validation for you choices, this is probably a great book and hopefully will motivate others to take the same path."

I was looking for inspiration too but it's definitely more of a validation type book.

I have a hold on this book at the library. Heard about it in Hobby Farm Home. Can't wait to read it!

I just got this book, I'm only half way through, but it has really inspired me. I've been feeling guilty for being a "housewife" for way too long. This book has really helped me realize I am on the right life path.
