From the abstract, 4.7% of all children operated on during the study period were due to late complications from previous circumcision. 7.4% of all children seen in the outpatient pediatric urology clinic were for complciations from previous circumcision.

It is good that they conclude there is a need for better study on complications, something this community has been saying for a long time. Too bad they are only looking at the narrow area of gross complications seen during early childhood.

It would be much better if they included complications in adults as well. There certainly is a lot of anecdotal information that suggests a range of ocmplications, some one could argue as pretty severe, that arise form circumcision. Skin bridges, penises bent by skin too tight, etc.

These things, and more, are complications that can have negative impacts beyond mere aesthetics. Unfortunately in a time and place with mostly cut males these things are accepted as "normal" variations. Pretty much as long as there isn't a full amputation and the male is left with a reasonable facsimile of a penis, that seems to be good enough for those with a pro-circ agenda.

The whole premise of studying the complications to try to come up with ways to prevent them is rather mind boggling. Seriously isn't it really obvious that the simplest most cost efficient way to prevent complication is to not do completely unnecessary surgeries.

I agree. But they do not seem to be looking at whether to RIC or not. They are looking at what happens after that decision is made.

No matter what medical treatment you choose, it is good to look at the complications and see if you can reduce them.
