I agree with everything Shami said. My daughter already has play groups, so one of the main reasons I signed her up was because I wanted something that would not only be fun for her, but that would help teach her how to follow directions. I wanted something with a little more structure. I took gymnastics as a kid and I LOVED it, and I think that based on her personality I think she would also really love it. If not, then we'll try something else.
I do my best to keep her with me and help her pay attention when the coach is talking, but there are times when she is having NONE of that. During those time, I have to let her roam, but I do what I can to keep her close (and quiet), even if that means standing up and holding her next to a piece of equipment that's away from the group.
She will join the class if she is ready. I can encourage all I want, but if it's not what she wants, I won't force her. So far though, she seems to enjoy it (even if she does have a problem with the whole "following direction" part.
