Anyone one Bupropion (Welbutrin) while bfing?

I am thinking of just starting this drug as soon as this baby is born and I have established a milk supply. I had pretty severe ppd depression and anxiety after my last baby and tried every natural remedy I could plus zoloft, which I cannot take due to severe side effects. I finally weaned him to go on Cymbalta, which my doctor would not proscribe while I was nursing. I have taken Welbutrin in the past to quit smoking and I had no side effects. It seems to be the best choice for me for many reasons, but I am a little hesitant because it is not the best choice for bfing. I would love to hear some feedback from moms who are using it. Thanks!

I switched from zoloft to welbutrin when DS1 was about 12 mos-- i HATED the zoloft side effects....and within weeks he quit nursing altogether. No weaning, just up and dumped me over the course of about 2 days.....I panicked and called the psych. who prescribed it....she admitted that the timing was bizarre but really didn't think it had anything to do with the milk. I began pumping and he happily drank it from a sippy cup-- so she was probably right. He didn't want the boob but he would drink the milk. Who knows?

I wish I had more info to share-- I did enough research at that time that I obviously felt comfortable nursing him with welbutrin in my system.

Good luck?

I switched from paxil to wellbutrin as soon as I got pregnant because wellbutrin is the safest during pregnancy.....baby is 3 1/2 weeks old and I'm still on it I really like it, much fewer side effects. I just have a hard time remembering my 2nd dose each day so I have to set an alarm on my cell phone to remind me. My milk came in just fine after I got rid of that bit of retained placenta.

I've been on Wellbutrin after the birth of DD1 and then again when DD2 was a few months old. I had good experiences on it, and didn't notice any effects on my nurslings.

I went on Wellbutrin when dd was about 12 months old. We are still nursing at 17 months, didn't notice any drop in my supply (though it may be hard to tell, since dd is naturally nursing less these days).

I went on Wellbutrin while nursing dd2 - didn't notice any problems with her whatsoever. This is stacked on top of the Prozac I was already taking.

My midwife just gave me a Rx for Wellbutrin XL. She discussed it with her back up doc and a perinatalogist and they suggested starting me before the birth so it has time to build up in my system. I will update later! Thanks for all your replies.

What dosage are you on ?

I had a friend who just had a baby ask me about this yesterday. Are you taking 150XL or 300XL? I took it years ago for infertility stress and never knew people took it while nursing. Let me know.

I took it while pregnant and nursing. I did have milk supply issues, which there is some antecdotal evidence of it causing in some women(I also had a c/section, so..). Of course, one of my best friends was on it as well and she had an oversupply, so who knows...

Philia - anecdotally I will share that I take 250 mg/day buproprion and 20 mg/day fluoxetine.

I have PPD & see a psychatrist for my meds. Due to my severe allergies to medications & other things, my regular dr sent me to see the psych dr for meds. I prefer to see the psych dr since they have a better understanding of what can be taken with what, side effects & when you can't take when everyone else does, they know of other meds the regular drs wouldn't think of.

One of the meds I'm taking is Wellbutrin XL. He said that everyone should start at 150 mg & then work up to a higher dose if it's needed. It's been helpful so far. I'm taking 150 mg & probably will go up to 300 mg at my next visit in a couple weeks.

I went on Wellbutrin during my pregnancy and am still on it (ds is almost 3wks old.) It was the only thing they were comfortable putting me on while pregnant. I'm on 100mg a day. It seems to be working okay, but at my next check up, I might switch to Zoloft, depending on how things are going.

Congratulations on your baby! Did your son have any withdrawal symptoms?

Thank you. I haven't noticed any symptoms of anything in him. He's a little spit uppy, but not has horrible as my first who had reflux, so my view of "normal" might be skewed. My supply has been more than fine.

I'm taking 150 mg XL for now with a follow up 4-6 weeks after the birth to evaluate whether I need to go up to 300mg. Did it make anyone else nauseated? I'm wondering if it is the prodromal labor or the Wellbutrin that makes me feel like barfing all day.

Just an update. I am almost 4 weeks pp and feel great. Lots of energy and I feel HAPPY! I did not feel this good at any point after my last baby. I am still a little worried that it is too soon, that something is going to set it off. I guess it feels too good to be true. Baby seems to be doing great too. Thanks you all for your responses. It really helped me make the decision to try Wellbutrin.

This is great to hear!

I am already on 40 mg Prozac and my psychiatrist is added 150 mg Wellbutrin to help me with my PPD now (took the Prozac all through pregnancy and it worked well, but like both other times PPD is now getting worse about 2-3 months PP). I am hoping it will work well for me and good to know the baby does not seem to have any ill effects from it.
